Description Southeastern Alaska she-wolf, made into my personal headdress. Still drying, and in need of some paint. Was debating on the eye color, but glad I chose green.

Note: This wolf was legally killed for population control by a friend in Alaska. If you don't like it, don't look.

What's sad about it? Animals die and are left to rot in the ground all the time. At least this wolf was not wasted and will live on for years to come so she can be appreciated and cherished, even after death.

love the color on her, as well as eye color choice. Wolves eyes changes from gray to blue to green to yellow, and with her color phase it goes well together

NaturePunk In reply to DragonsRage24 [2012-03-14 22:16:30 +0000 UTC]

Wolves actually don't have the genetic conditions for blue eyes as adults. Most pictures of 'blue' eyed wolves are just pale green, have been Photoshopped, or are pictures of wolf-dog hybrids.

DragonsRage24 In reply to NaturePunk [2012-03-15 17:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, I meant that from the age of born to pup to adolescent to adult, that is the color change/range they experience (the pups I've been working with went through this change and I documented it with one pup in particular as he let me take very close photos of his eyes, I heart him lol), pardon if my wording was confusing. Yellow or yellow phase (lemon yellow to amber/sunset gold) are the most typical/abundant. I've only actually seen 1 wolf with blue eyes, that was full blood wolf, BUT his family history had something to do with why he had blue eyes Its so easy to change eye color, you could make them purple if you really wanted to with photoshop lol. Regardless, the color you picked for your headdress I think goes very well, the green looks green/yellow which is a rather nice contrast ^^

Absolutely stunning. We hardly get anything interesting in the UK fur wise, unless it's super expensive.

Do you have any tips or advice on how to get hold of some pelts (anything really). Do you have many Taxidermy places around you? Or do you hunt the internet?
Where would the best places be to try? Auctions, antique places, maybe even asking butchers/hunting societies?

Thank you for uploading these fantastic images, you're so inspiring :3

When I lived in England, I found most pelts and furs at antique stores. I couldn't buy any because I couldn't bring them back across the pond, but I saw many things that I would have loved to have had. Most of the antique stores I frequented were in Windsor, where I lived, but I saw a lot of them in Henley-on-Thames.

There are also some fantastic auction houses in the UK. If you contact them and ask about wildlife materials, they can notify you if there is going to be an auction which includes items they think may interest you.

.. thought those eyes looked familiar! I was just looking at them to buy for jewelry but alas, I'm too lazy and I'd probably never get anything done with it. So I shall wait for you to have more green leopard eye rings to pounce upon.

I believe have one in the shop right now. And I've also got eyes in different colors with both slit pupil and round pupil.

By chance, would you ever have an albino eye or coyote eye? Say, doing a custom one in the future?

NaturePunk In reply to ShadiSin [2012-03-12 02:36:58 +0000 UTC]

I had albino eyes, but they sold out fast. Will be getting plenty more in the future. And I can certainly do a custom make.

Oh, wonderful <3 I'll definitely be wanting an albino in the future from you, or a coyote. I never made it in time for your last albinos!

Very nice. How do you keep the fur looking so... healthy? Looks better than MY dogs' fur right now. Of course they are all covered in dirt and dried grass, getting it all over my bed as I type.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NaturePunk In reply to Tuishimi [2012-03-11 06:44:18 +0000 UTC]

The wolves do a pretty good job of caring for themselves. But of course, the hide is cleaned of burs and dirt during the tanning process, so that also helps.

Tuishimi In reply to NaturePunk [2012-03-11 20:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I should tan my dog's hide. (J/K of course)

Where did you get those green eyes? I always see brown wolf eyes for sale.

The green eyes are from Tohickon. They're made for a leopard, but I thought they seemed fitting.

Could you give me some information about those population control things? I know nothing about them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NaturePunk In reply to AlvarV [2012-03-11 01:59:29 +0000 UTC]

Sure thing: Population control is proven effective in places like Alaska and Canada among wolves (if managed properly). In fact, in places where wolves were culled, scientists discovered that populations increased to exceed initial numbers. This is due, in part, to the momentary lack or predators as the result of the cull, which leads to an increased survival rate among prey items, resulting in a population boom. In response to this sudden abundance of prey, the wolves themselves produce even more cubs than in years prior to the cull, and populations of both predator and prey remain strong and balanced.

firedanceryote In reply to NaturePunk [2012-03-11 05:28:51 +0000 UTC]

Can you link me to those studies? I know that is true of coyotes, but I think that wasn't so effective with wolves. Everything I read suggests while coyotes adjust their numbers based on culls, wolves don't. That's why wolves vanished from Yellowstone for years while coyotes flourished is my understanding.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NaturePunk In reply to firedanceryote [2012-03-11 06:43:25 +0000 UTC]

[link]

The issue with Yellowstone's wolves is that people eradicated so many that they didn't have a chance to make a comeback after the cull. People back then literally wanted wolves to be gone for good; now, biologists realize that hunting works only if it's VERY carefully regulated. Unlike wolves, coyotes are so plentiful that they'll just swarm back to any place that has an open niche for them.

firedanceryote In reply to NaturePunk [2012-03-22 07:08:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for that. I learned something! I also appreciate you linking an actual biologist not a pro-fur/pro-hunting page or whatever like I've seen some people do. Kudos

Actually the reason coyotes are so successful is they use a prey strategy to breeding. The more coyotes which are killed the higher litters they have to compensate. Domestic cats actually do the same... which is why feral cats have larger litters now then in past.
