Description Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

Headscarves are scarves covering most or all of the top of a woman's hair and her head. they may be worn for a variety of purposes, such as for warmth, for sanitation, for fashion or social distinction; with religious significance, to hide baldness, out of modesty, or other forms of social convention.

What is “modest clothing?”
For Muslim women, “modest clothing” may mean a multitude of different things. For some, it means a burqa. For others, modesty means loose clothing and a head-cover. For others, loose clothing that does not reveal cleavage, arms and legs is modest. And the variations continue.

Muslim women who wear headscarves in public may do so for one or more of the following reasons:
Many Muslims believe God requires women to cover their hair. Many people who don’t believe it’s required believe that it is preferable for Muslim women to cover their hair. It is sufficient that for many Muslim women, covering the hair is a religious act.
Many Muslims believe that covering the head engenders a certain spiritual state of receptivity and centeredness. So, many women who do not wear head-covers all the time may do so for religious occasions, or when inspired to do so.
Head-covers convey a message of purity and godliness to many observers. Different traditions of religious iconography use mantles and other head-covers to symbolize purity and even saintliness.
Many people believe that a headscarf engenders respect and honor for women, thus preventing men from flirting, etc...
They identify a woman as an observant Muslim to non-Muslims. This facilitates awareness of her lifestyle right off the bat, without necessitating lengthy explanations (“Sorry, I don’t drink.” “I’m sorry, I’m a conservative Muslim woman and I don’t shake hands with men.” “Oh, it’s time for me to pray; you see, um, I’m Muslim.”)
They identify a woman as Muslim to other Muslims, allowing for instant community and exchange of salams (Islamic greeting).
For many Muslim women, head-covers are culturally normative and/or beloved, and are part of an ethnic outfit.
In certain cultures, covering one’s head is respectful to other people, especially to status superiors such as older people.
and there are many other reasons...
This shows that the Muslim headscarf is capable of a number of meanings, many of which are rather more mundane and less dramatic than outsiders might imagine.

if you are a girl and you wear a head-scarf for a reason that's not mentioned above, feel free to comment and share with us why do you wear a headscarf.

many people, when talking about a woman covering her hair, they imagine a Muslim woman. while in fact, there are many women of different cultures and religions who choose to cover their hair for different reasons. I wanted to make this drawing to show you how similar different women would look when they cover their hair...

from right to left:
- an Orthodox Jewish woman.
- a Sabian woman
- a Muslim woman
- a Hindu Woman
- Catholic Nun

EDIT:after I received some good critiques from some people, I made the Jewish woman's top a little loose. I think it looks better this way.

I hope that was beneficial.

Wassalaamu alaikum,

Sigh.  As you well know, Christianity does not require lay women to cover their hair.  With nuns it's just a habit.

In any case, this is a beautiful illustration, and the young ladies are obviously having a good time together (watch those carbs now!)

Wonder how long it'll take for this one to get hidden? (Hope I'm not putting you to too much trouble, Nayzak; you ain't seen nothin' yet; too bad you can't hide or censor anything on my own site or those of my not inconsiderable circle, ain't it.)

umm...r u a christian by chance.?
if so then your Holy Bible says
1 Corinthians 11:5-6     :
5.But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. 6:For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.

and then 1 Corinthians 14:34-35    :
34:The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35:If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.…

i'm just a student of comparison so if i were to make a mistake then its purely from me, but if i were right then it's purely n absolutely from God...
i had no intention to offend anyone...Peace be With you All...

Yes.  I guess puns are my bad habit.  That and bothering to cross words with the likes of Nayzak.  Not that he's ever bothered to parry, but I did have a very enjoyable days-long back and forth with one of his DA defenders, one Yami-D-sparx, which ole Yami unfortunately kept hidden, till he blocked me.  Muslimaniacs are so touchy.  Last thing I got, no doubt not hidden, was a warning about keeping children away from drugs with a link to a picture of Kim Jong Un, me in effigy, so to speak, I guess.

Well, sorry, Panhead13, reckon you know another of my bad habits now.

Thanks much for the reply.  Glad someone got a chuckle out of that.

Like your icon, by the way; may that flag ever wave.  Guess it'd be a good idea to visit your site right about now.

Hi.(・∀・)
It's a very pretty illustration. Because an illustration became the topic of conversation in Japanese Twitter, I have come to see.

Because there is also a hood Ms. nun puts on in the Buddhism of Japan, Ms. Buddhist nun inserts it in my company after is sticking a link of a reference picture this time, too.
(The one holding in hand is equivalent to the Christian "rosary" called "juzu".)
A material picture was uploaded in my page, so please see.

See you again. (If it's difficult to read because it's excited translation, I'm sorry.)

Really beautiful!
I really love the headscarfs. They can come in all colours and patterns and that is what makes them so beautiful!
I had a muslim friend in my class who wore some of these and they could look really pretty!

In Sweden, we got Christianity. So we had people called Nuns. They are female worshipers of God. For some reason, they where also in hospitals as nurses. I believe they where there to give peace and pray to the Christians that where put into the hospitals. Now, we don't have these anymore. But we always have the Bible with us if someone wants us to read it. So we still have that.
And even though I myself do not choose to be in any religion, as I'm very open to every religion, I do think that this really beautiful. I really admire how the nuns looked.

You might also be interested in headscarves from other parts of the world entirely. For example here are some photographs of Russian peasant women wearing headscarves: monaster.livejournal.com/5365.…

UsagiToxic In reply to ibn-Ezra [2014-03-11 22:07:32 +0000 UTC]

These are not about modesty, though. These headscarves are for working and keeping head warm/protected from sunlight.

ibn-Ezra In reply to UsagiToxic [2014-03-13 22:42:24 +0000 UTC]

Then why don't men wear them? Because there is more to it than that. If you go inside a Russian Orthodox church, you will find all the women wearing headscarves. Do they need to keep their head warm/protected from sunlight in a church?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UsagiToxic In reply to ibn-Ezra [2014-03-14 00:07:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, in case of these photos it's because men are too busy wearing helmets at the war.

Don't rush to conclusions so quickly. Men totally use them. I am Russian woman, so I probably know this stuff from the inside better than you do.

Men use headscarves while working in the field. For example, my dad and grandfather wore them. I even remember that my father used to wear blue, white-dotted headscarf. He also sometimes twisted it into some kind of headband.

Also men use hats because their hair isn't long so they don't have a necessity to tame it so it wouldn't just be all over their faces. Even when hair is in a braid, it tends to get loose or just meddle with hands.

Regarding churches... well, yes, more and more women wear them in church (and take off the moment they step outside), but my mother never wore one. When I was with her in one of St. Petersburg Churches this autumn, neither she, nor me were wearing one. I also saw a lot of women with just hats without any headscarves. To cover one's head is more like a sign of politeness in "God's house". At least I was told that.

Also using the Soviet era photos in religious purposes is a bad idea, you know. Very few were truly religious back then, when it was really frowned upon.

Additionally, take a look at this typical 19th century photograph: nn.mk.ru/upload/iblock_mk/475/…

Notice it is the women and not the men who are wearing headscarves.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UsagiToxic In reply to ibn-Ezra [2014-03-15 09:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Well it's polite for men to take their headscarves/hats off. Especially when photos were a big deal.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ibn-Ezra In reply to UsagiToxic [2014-03-14 16:45:12 +0000 UTC]

As a Russian Jew, I'm aware of all that, although I perhaps don't have as much of an insider's perspective on the Christian aspect. The photos were just an example and even though they were taken at a particular time period, I'm sure you know that Russian women dressed that way well before the Soviet Union.

Anyway, the way I saw the original post was that women wear headscarves for all sorts of different reasons that are not only religious, so I felt I should bring up some cultures that were left out of the drawing.

I personally think that headscarves are very pretty and contrast nicely with the wearer's skin. I like how women can choose so many different beautiful colors and patterns and that appeals to me as an artist.

I have a friend that makes her own dresses and comes in many beautiful headscarves that match with the colors or her clothes.

I'm more partial to hats though(for wearing) but, I rarely wear anything.

I cover because I dislike comments on my body and wearing a headscarf both helps cover up and very much so shortens the explanations of why I'm wearing pants and long-sleeves in 80 or 90 degree Fahrenheit weather. I'm not religious, but I am a feminist and for me this is one way to tell men "This is something you don't get."

I'm still nervous about offending religious women, but I've done enough research I feel I understand how to handle it politely and respectfully.

I greatly appreciate your artwork and how well-done it is. It's a delight to see your work.

I've been experimenting with wearing a headscarf since coming across your page and have discovered that in Oklahoma, USA, it is extremely practical for anyone with long hair to bind it up. My hair is too short in back for a ponytail, but long enough in front that it blows all over the place in our wind and gets in my face. If I have a hairstyle when I leave the house, it's lost by the time I get to work! I'm still undecided what I believe on the issue of modesty and spiritualism (doing a lot of soul searching on that topic), but I can't argue with the practicality! I've been taking a scarf with me outside a lot more often and have found a couple different fast and easy ways to wrap it up that I really like.

If nothing else, thanks for helping me find a way to stop looking messy the moment I walk in from outside.
