From "The Cutie Map", Starlight was shocked Twilight easily stopped her magical beam attack using a defense barrier she herself had studied for years in order to do. Twilight simply points out that studying could only take one so far, but her interactions with her friends and others helped to bring about other aspects of herself she wouldn't have discovered on her own. Without them, Twilight would never have found out about her destiny, and she certainly wouldn't have been able to liberate the town Starlight had under her thumb.
The message doesn't get across, as Starlight basically tells her she can go shove it. All she cares about is that her cult had been taken apart before escaping to plot her revenge.
