Varrick needs to be the wacky science teacher who accidentally sets off the fire alarm every class with his fun, on-hands experiments. His TA, Zhu Li, is often the one holding the fire extinguisher.
Also he's the majority contributor to the school, so they can't fire him.

Season 4 of Korra comes out next year. After that, the creators have sort of indicated that they'd like to distance themselves from the franchise, because it takes a big toll on them to work on the show. In a podcast I listened to, they seemed to feel like it would probably end with Korra, but they also acknowledged that they could possibly be roped back into doing it somewhere down the line.
