Description I wanted to branch out a little from strictly doing 3-D SMB scenes & try my hand at making a 3-D scene from the original 8-bit Legend of Zelda Nintendo game. Here, Link is in dungeon 3 and fighting Zols. I left enough blank space at the top to accommodate a full horizontal row of Windows icons; enough space is also at the bottom for the toolbar.

NES is the abbreviation for the Nintendo Entertainment System (the original 8-bit Nintendo system that came out in '85).

If it weren't for the angle I'd swear this was a screen shot until going to full view.

Awesomeness

Thank you.

Yeah...in this version, Link is actually walking on the dungeon floor, instead of being perpendicular to it.

Karyudo-DS In reply to NES--still-the-best [2008-07-23 17:20:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, perpendicular did work for those "side scroller style scenes with the bats and the ladders and the treasure chest. I'd love to see something like one of these animated, figure that would look pretty weird if you could get the 8bit timing look down

Me, too. Maybe by chance, an employee of Nintendo will someday see these and get the ball rolling. They'd know where to find me.

No kidding...part of the reason I put these out is the ultra-slim hope that someone from Nintendo may someday see these. Hopefully they'd think they were suitable ideas for remakes of the classics.

Thanks for the screen caps, I never came across those before, and I though I scoured every nook and cranny on the web for any 8-bit 3-D stuff.

I don't know...what I opened from the zip folders ended up not loading for me, even after using 7zip. I'll let you know if I come across ones that work. It could be the fact I'm running Vista, and it's just not compatible with my OS. That whole "Run in windows 95" option under properties doesn't work worth a damn on Vista.

I played that thing under Win2000, worked like a charm. By the way, there are other "oldschool Zelda 3D" projects going, though I find most of them very... unpretty.
I even saw one where you control Link like in a shooter, from FP... including WASD controls. Very... strange.

With the graphics we have today, yeah that would be cool!! But unfortunately most of the bonehead game techs of today have a way of making beautiful scenes while adding crappy story lines and unskilled voice actors! Ah the curse of it all!!! You remember when games were actually worth buying? What happened to that!? Where are the creators when their originality is getting ruined right in front of their eyes?! YAARRRGGHHH!! (I'm so sad)

Fantastic stuff like this deserve such praise!

Not only is reminiscent of a fantastic game, it's also one of the most original pieces of art I've seen. Yeah, it's a really simple concept, but it's one I would never think of, and from what I've seen, neither have others.

Once again, great work!
