Clarke's third law states: 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'
Arthur C. Clarke, "Profiles of The Future", 1961 English physicist & science fiction author (1917 - )

This law of Sci Fi became well known after Clarks rise to fame following the success of 2001, and it was probably one of the most influential ideas behind the blending of high fantacy with 'hard' science fiction in the 1970s and beyond. It became common practice to gloss over the plausability of futuistic technolgy because Clark's law gave everyone a licence to say 'its beyond contemporary (Human) understanding'. Cultural relativism is taken for granted today, but in the 'serious' SF world up to the 1950's it was unthinkable. The whole idea of SF was to explore the possibilties hinted at by real scientific research.

So yes... under Clarks law you can have 'real' dragons. But Jurasic Park demonstrated like no other film, why it was not a good idea to do something like that just because we can.

So I put the question: If entertainment was not a good enough reason to bring 'dragons' to life, what would be? Why would you create something so terrible and dangerious? The answer to me is medicine.

Create a dragon on 'our side'; a dragon capable of hunting down and destroying cancer cells within a living human; a dragon too small to get out of hand.

A published work is beyond the control of an artist and I think it is stupid to try. People are free to interpret this image as they please, and there is nothing the artist or anyone else can do to stop this from happening.

BTW turn the sucker 'tail up', and check out the movement! Wow!

I regard this image as still in progress.

I have it by my desk as I write this. These days I like to look at it on its 'side'.

It was never 'finished'.

Unfinished??

Yeah. It was (is?) going to have a fully rendered background. But that would take me about 100 hours to do.

Oh yeah...Arthur C. Clarke is awesome!

What i really like about this work is that you have created the sense of zero gravity by leaving the empty space around the bot. It also creates a sense of very bright light because the shadows on the bot are very dark. i like that you have used the scale from end to end.

And the subject matter is so sci-fi! That is what i grew up on! The detail is very well done, also.

Hmmm, did you do it whit pen? Impressive details.

Human creats much usless, and dengerous things. Now sience messes whit the DNA. :S What will come out of that?

newepoch In reply to Feebaum [2006-04-24 12:35:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes it was all done with a micro pen.

Anything that is dangerious is not useless. All acts of creation are similtainiously acts of destruction. In order to cure desease in a host, we must destroy the desease. Its all a question of degrees.

'Science' can't mess with anything, because science is just a thought process.

Its people who use the knowledge gained from science who may be the problem.

There are a few things I am hoping will come out of DNA reasearch aside of course from the obvious medical cures. The ability to replace missing teeth. Regrow inner ear hairs. Make the body resistant to UV radiation. It would also be great if we could fix the human asophigus so we could all swallow and breath at the same time.

Yes, you're rigth It's like the medicine: the rigth amount of dose heals. To much ammount kills.

About the DNA reasearch: missing theet replacement would be great But the body resistant to UV, and the other things...they are quite unnatural

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

newepoch In reply to Feebaum [2006-04-25 10:16:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes they are 'unnatural' for humans today, but not other animals. We used to have hair but now we don't.

The real problem is that we have made a mess of this planet. We may have no choice but to change ourselves in order to survive the changing environment in the coming centuries.

Let's hope that. Who knows, what things will the humanity invent...I can imagine, that humanity destroys the Earth.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

newepoch In reply to Feebaum [2006-04-26 13:18:21 +0000 UTC]

My point is that we arwe not powerful enough to destroy the earth... only change its environment so we can no longer survive here. There is a difference.

Feebaum In reply to newepoch [2006-04-26 13:41:42 +0000 UTC]

I go out of my way to make my stuff look 'amazing' because I think wonder is a good way to get people interested in my work. People tend to respect complex hand made objects and it means I can expose a lot of people to statements they would otherwise ignore.

It is neat - I like your way of drawing!

It looks very interesting and it won't get boring to watch as you can find so many details.

It appears really plastic - cool pice of (emotionless) art!

newepoch In reply to Paperglass [2006-02-08 10:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Emotionless I don't try to transmit what I am feeling through my work because that would be impractical. My emotions change countless times during 150 hours of drawing spread over X number of days. But once I do have an idea of what the drawing is about i do work towards a consitant theme.
But it is all pure visual thinking on may part... all shapes and lines.

Wow. Never cease to be amazed. I think I'll make that a rule of mine.
2 questions: Are you a scifi nerd, and is the full veiw the size of the paper for the most part or is it bigger?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

newepoch In reply to GoGo-T-W [2006-01-08 10:48:57 +0000 UTC]

That's a very good rule. I recomend getting yourself a microscope one day. Nature is cool.

I read a lot of scfi when I was young and I have always had a keen interest in science and technology. I like to watch scfi on TV but these days I am more interested in the set design and the special effects. The really sad thing about scfi is a great deal of the most imaginative stories are buried in long forgotten magazines, and nearly everything that reaches the TV is conceptually 40 years behind the literature.
I have a wide range of interests, scifi is just one of them.

Most of the drawings I have in my gallaries are done on A3 sized paper. I am not sure how big the images are because I was concerned with delivering a quality image, not a certain sized image. Those images I have avalable as prints are scaled by the dA staff so I have no control over that.

Gorgeous dragon, and fascinating idea... if they don't live for more than 46 hours, they can't take over the body
I absolutely love it My only suggestion would be to make the fullview a little smaller using a photo editing program (so viewers can make sense of it without scrolling).
