Description I just threw this together- trying out something new!
I don't often do pure environment work or get quite this painty- but I've been pushing in that direction more and more, and I've really enjoyed experimenting with it!

This is just a quick style test, but I figured it would be neat to show you guys just a little process- it's not much, and I still intend to record some sort of tutorial video for character work- but I was pleased with how this came out.
I busted out some of my old Hollow Men methods for this- it was like seeing an old friend

It's really pretty generic and not conceptually fancy at all, but as an exercise in technique I think I learned a lot and I'm excited to see where I could push this!

im still trying to get better at drawing on a pc but let me try to understand how this was done. you made a sketch, dropped the darkest color down, added the basic color of everything, then gradually added in the lighting?

that's exactly right I like working dark to light when I paint like this, since adding the lights is fun

I like seeing how you worked from a mostly cool colour pallete to something significantly warmer in the final piece. It's a very interesting process! In the strip along the top- in the last two images- did you paint the richer red tones into the piece or simply do a colour adjustment process (through the program, not manually)?

nicholaskole In reply to kvweber [2012-12-08 05:30:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm glad it's informative
I always work cool-to-warm...I prefer to start by making my shadows work together and try to make sure they're relatively complex (which is kinda hard), and I do that first because it's like eating your vegetables...my favorite part is painting in the highlights, so I save that for later
It's funny, because watercolor is the opposite...and I love that too! Go figure.
Anwyay- to your question; that step is mostly a somewhat complicated system of masks, gradients and color adjustments to get what I want...I tend to move between that and painting in by hand. But at that stage I do use the program to adjust things a lot! Haha- ain't no shame

Thanks! Right now I'm freelancing wherever I can find it while I wait to hear back on a few long-term things. Always looking for ways to pay the bills! This was for an art-test to do some concept work for a game studio
