Really good picture. I do not like those stories where Superman and Wonder Woman are immortal and never wounded elle older with time.

Both Clark and Diana have slow aging BUT is not completely immortal.

An older but still powerful version of Superman is much more human and better to compare with.

Oh nice work here mate, I did a similar Supes back in the day from the good old General Ross... errr Alex. Anyhow, this came out really nice.

I'm sorry to hear and read that letter you've got from Marvel. That's a damn shame. At least they keep a positive tone in it and implore you to keep trying and eventually re-submit. (Think of it this way, they are nicer now then in 1997... The dudes made me cry at a con that I waited 3 hours in line for a critique... sure I didn't draw so well back then, but they didn't hold back and were really really mean about it.)

So at least the letter from Joe is fluffy and isn't meant to hurt your feelings or sway you from trying again. Best of luck with the back to square one bit, I know that one day you'll get a better response from the big guys.

-Sean

No need to feel sorry. I submitted to prove to myself that I could get my sh!t together and actually walk the walk in terms of "I'm going to submit to Marvel Comics." Maybe one day I will submit again, but right now my goals are more in the field of art education and pin-up illustrations versus attempting to break-in to the comics field.

Not bad Nick
Alex Ross is the Norman Rockwell of comics

He sure is. This was done well over 3 years ago, so it's not quite up to snuff. I think it would be interesting for me to redo this sometime in the future.

I know it is just a practice......and you can probably do even greater now......but I loved how this one just stuck out in your gallery, and facial features are nice and dark!! I like it alot, so I had to fave it!! heeheee!!

Oh thank you Rachel. Well, any type of work you do after Alex Ross had better be half-decent. But in all reality it was a good piece to work on; to use comic book style shading and inking on a photorealistic painting.
And I hope that I can make many more good works up to that caliber as well. Thanks for looking and the fav!

Thanks for the kind words bro. Trust me, I still get very intimidated by other people's artwork. It's good in a way..it makes you think about how other people draw and what styles you prefer. In a way it's like a competition, but everyone wants each other to be in first place though. Art's weird like that......I guess we have a stronger sense of community then other professions do.
That's the great thing about DA. You can get really sound advice on your work and other people will take the time to help you out. I like it here, it keeps me goin' and my creative juices flowin'.
Take care my friend.

I see a big improvement in this picture. If you're going for a serious ink job and want to go for that really nice stylistic comic look - you should be penciling and mapping out the areas you will shade and how you will shade them with a pencil First! If you are doing so already then good. If not try this - then just simply erase the any pencil marks after you have layed the ink. If you want to become a great inker - it isn't necessary to ink you're own work when you have tons of penciled work by pros out there! But if you are trying to improve both your penciling and inking than this can be a very effective method. I myself am not much of an inker - but if you have questions about pencilling you can direct them towards me.

Heres a couple things i see when i'm looking at the pic-
The basic structure of his face neck and torso are pretty good. But there are still some obvious innacuracies in his anatomy.
I don't see you making use of halos, thick/thin lines - two of the most important tools in inking. Mastering the use of thick and thin lines in inking can make a huge difference - as subtle as it seems.
The hatching seems a little arbitrary - (in some spots on his chest) It also seems a bit messy - i have found hatching in lines as parralel as possible makes one's inks look really clean. Also again experiment with think and thin within your hatching as well. just cause you're hatching doesn't mean the lines have to be thin and quick.
I like the way the hair is done- it really shows a good use of texture. Keep going in that direction for hair tying out new things.

Yes, I know all about lineweights and spotting blacks and haloing....now. Back when I drew this pic in January, I didn't. Maybe why Marvel didn't take me . Hatching's still a problem area for me.......I'm getting better at it, but it still looks sloppy. Feathering as well........it's all coming together for me. I'm not gunna nail it overnight, but just by comparing works that I did from eariler in the year to now....huge improvement. Perfect? Nope. Still room for improvement? Of course. Every artist has room for improvement. I've got my own list of things that I need to work on, and trust me, I do plan on adding and subtracting from it.

I adore all your little comic strips.
I just read Kingdom Come and loved it.
You did a really good job on his hair
and capturing the shadows. :3
What do you think of Jim Lee & Alex Ross collaborations?

NickMockoviak In reply to XxRainXChildxX [2005-05-31 23:09:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the on the strips. When I decide not to be lazy I'll make some more and post'em here.

What do I think of the Lee/Ross collaborations? Well I do like Alex Ross and his style, but I'm not big into Jim Lee. I saw some stuff in the Comic Shop News some time ago and thought it looked alright. I'll have to look again but for the time it doesn't strike my fancy.

And thanks for them kind words on the Supes.

This one really stands out in your gallery. Excellent work on this one! It's really tough to take a painted pic and get the same feel in just black and white...you managed to do it well.
