This measures 8 x 12 inches and was painted on canvas paper. It's an interesting surface to work on but I think I'm going back to my smooth watercolor paper for a while.

Thanks to Houndofthenight for the use of this photo.

I love that mottled texture you created for the bg! How did you do that, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind at all! ^.^ It is layers of drawing ink. I would put a layer of colors on, let them bleed together and make fun shapes. Then I let it dry and take a water bottle and spritz water over it, heavily is some spots. I then let it dry and the water slowly drying pulls up the ink and leaves even more textures. When that dries I take more ink and use a toothbrush to splatter it all over the painting, then let that dry. When there are several layers of ink already dry you can lay on bits of watercolor, acrylic or more ink to get even more textures, the paint moves around freely and it's really fun. I then take a small paintbrush and accentuate areas I like and adjust areas I don't. Sometimes I splatter even more water on for more textures if I'm not happy with how it looks or I want something more.

My process is very hard to explain because it's very erratic. Maybe I will do a sample tutorial of my ink texture sometime.

Oh no that makes perfect sense to me! I'll definitely have to try that out! That sounds like its a blast to do but very time consuming! That's awesome!

I noticed in the progress piece that the cub's eye was covered in red. What did you do to change the texture for something smoother and striking?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nicole-Marie-Walker In reply to Ohthehumanityplz [2013-02-26 11:45:39 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean the actual inside of the eye? Or the area around it? Or the whole eye area including the eye.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ohthehumanityplz In reply to Nicole-Marie-Walker [2013-02-27 05:37:58 +0000 UTC]

Inside of the eye. The process piece of the eye seemed darker than this version.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nicole-Marie-Walker In reply to Ohthehumanityplz [2013-02-27 06:21:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay, yeah it is. Drawing ink is really easy to pull back on the canvas paper, so I used a wet brush to pull some up then added some purple to the eye. Used white ink for highlights and black India ink to darken up the darker bits.

This came out beautifully! And thank you for showing the process work too! I think the canvas paper adds a very nice background texture^^

I am curious, what media do you use for adding in the white sections/fur strands? Is it acrylic paint??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nicole-Marie-Walker In reply to 8TwilightAngel8 [2013-02-25 14:32:59 +0000 UTC]

I've used acrylic paint and gouache in the past but I'm currently using white ink. I actually didn't know white ink was a thing until a few months ago!

I both love and hate the canvas paper texture. XD

8TwilightAngel8 In reply to Nicole-Marie-Walker [2013-02-25 14:43:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah thank you! I didn't know about white ink either XD I thought for whatever reason before i started college that it was impossible to have. I just picked some up this week for the first time. I definitely want to try it out soon. My textile instructor loves it for her work.

It is a strong texture. I guess it depends on what you want do on the paper if you love or hate it. I think it works well here though since its not overpowering the other textures created with the paint/ink.
