Did you guys know that back in 1992, famous horror director John Carpenter was originally approached to write and direct a modern remake for The Creature From the Black Lagoon? These pictures I have seen before but never got the chance to search for them until now with a maquette sculpted by FX artist, Matt Rose, and another FX legend, Steve Wang. Who previously designed Gillman in Monster Squad (1987). And in one recent interview with John Carpenter, you can briefly see it for a few seconds on the right which is screen capped and I gotta say, this looks so damn amazing as a modern update to the iconic Universal monster. And considering what he did with his remake of The Thing 10 years prior, it's hard to imagine what this could've been like. There is a script for it and I had stumbled on it back in early 2020 but haven't read it.

Why wasn't it made? Well, at the time, Carpenter had directed Memoirs of An Invisible Man starring Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah and Sam Neal which was a modern take on the classic monster set in the present and based on a novel with the same title but it under perform at the box office in 1992 and because it flopped, the studio behind the Creature remake felt Carpenter wasn't really the right choice to direct and also at the time, his remake of The Thing was (at the time) HATED by everyone as a unnecessary and pointless remake to the original and it was a huge flop. Leaving John Carpenter to have very bad luck for studios to hire him throughout the 80s and 90s before retiring in 2001.
