Flying Polyps were one of the most fascinating of Lovecraft's creatures, only perhaps because he described them so little.Β  But the sense of dread they brought in A Shadow out of Time was really intense!Β

Illustrating Lovecraft (or at least attempting to do so) for so many years has been quite a challenging experience.Β  Some of them are vague, as you mentioned, or even called 'indescribable' or 'ever changing', it's hard to nail that down in one static image. Β  But, I suspect readers have the most fun with those sorts of descriptions because it gives the imagination a lot of room to play with, and it is only limited to that reader's own imagination.Β  On the other hand there are Lovecraftian creatures such as the elder things, which are described in an astoundingly technical manner, overwhelming the mind with data.Β  I can never match the mind's eye of each and every reader, but it is fun to try.

Very cool depiction! Flying Polyps are some of my favourite Lovecraftian creatures because of how vague and incomprehensible they are, and I think you managed to convey that ;D

Β  vague and incomprehensible is a perfect Lovecraft challenge for an artist... one tries to depict just enough for the viewer's imagination to take root, but not so much that it limit's their imagination.

i like it but i feel the mouths and teeth looks a bit silly because i don't imagine the partly material alien polyps to have mammal-like teeth.

You are my favorite illustrator of Lovercaft by far, it is as if his works resonated similar in my head, you can capture the same vibe, that I feel reading his stories.

Thank you so much for that very flattering comment!Β  I find Lovecraft's fans to be far more discriminating and well-read than most of my other audiences, so I've found it quite challenging to come anywhere close to depicting what the reader's have going on within their mind's eye.Β  I realized it is impossible to please them all, but it is rewarding when someone feels I got it right.

Doberlady In reply to nightserpent [2015-03-07 21:48:42 +0000 UTC]

Lovecraft's power over reader is in the "unnamable". It was nicely explained by King in foreword to HPL biography. That as log as the door is closed and only strange noise comes in, you have the tension, as soon as you open the door, the tension disappears, and no matter what scary monster you describe it will never match reader's private fears and expectations.
Lovecraft hints, and lets us ourselves fill in the blanks with our own worse nightmares.Β  Perhaps that's is why its is hard to depict his creations, and many fans envisage them in a different way.Β  But your way is uncannily similar to my way, to what I see in my mind's eye when I read his stories

They spawn at random. It's hard to explain without the rulebook in front of me or showing you.

It's a great game. It's a bit of a learning curve, but it's totally worth it. The only other problem is the cost. So many expansions, but so good~

Because the Polyps used the current form of the Yithians as a food source before the Yithian minds were transferred into them.
