The Undersea city of Sommersa has become known amongst the Kingdoms of the Seven Seas as The Science City.  During the time of The Great Sinking, the High King of Meropis; Arion, Lord of Atlantis cast a  spell to save the inhabitants of the sinking continent by converting them all into waterbreathers.  Based on the location, the conversion spell had different effects on the people it was altering.  Sommersa was near a mountain’s icecap in the water during the transformation, and the people took on characteristics of the ice in the water.  To protect them from the one responsible for the sinking, each of the cities would be relocated using the last remaining vestiges of Arion’s might.  Sommersa was mystically translocated into an underwater glacier.  Operating under a Technocratic Oligarchy, Sommersa once operated as the kingdom’s medical, technological, and intellectual hub.  Renowned for its technological advancements, in the research and study of advancing their environment and people; they have engendered a culture that has beome emotionally distant with its increased focus on logic and facts.  The royals of the city are among those with the greatest intellects and intellectual properties and advancements.  Each of the ruling families has submitted a member to the oversight committee known as the Council of Elders.  They operate not unlike a hospital’s board of directors, as a sort of checks and balances system. While the city’s resources are all devoted to scientific endeavors, the only form of defense the realm has is The Sword.  This grants the Sword a position of power in the form of privilege, but they are not granted decision making powers when it comes to the citizens. The apprentice to The Sword is usually recommended by the Council, but Killer Frost broke tradition when she chose Icemaiden as her apprentice…

Icicle: Joar; Sword of Sommersa (Swordmaster)

Joar has the distinction of being one of the most cold-hearted people to weild his city’s mystical sword.  His intelligence is strong and analytical; it enables him to judge each detail of every situation. Joar reflects long before reacting, and when he does his reactions are calm, precise and deadly. Although He is very patient in his efforts, he has been known to blow up occasionally. He has an exceptional memory and a strong curiosity that touches everything but risks being somewhat scattered at times.  From the time he was appointed as an apprentice, he plotted from the very beginning on the path he would take to claim the sword.  After betraying his master, Crios; he took possession of it, and has defended his city with precision.  He has gone through a number of apprentices, as the  paranoia he claims that helps to keep him at the top of his game, also prevents him from allowing his potential replacement to learn too much and become a threat.  Some have suspected that he may intentionally place his apprentices in harm’s way or have even taken some of them out himself, but citizens have come to learn not to question the Way of the Swords that their protectors live by.  He has by far, been the most cruel to …

Frost: Kanki; Icepick and Icespike
Apprentice to The Sword of Sommersa

An orphan with no family to claim her, Kanki showed scholastic aptitude, but seemed to be cursed with what the citizens of Sommersa rejected most…emotion.  She was pulled from her training track and placed in the deconditioning program. When that failed, there was no other place for her in their society and she became a member of the Outcaste.  Candidates for Apprentice to the Sword were chosen from the outcaste as they were deemed expendible, and to properly weild the sword, there was more that was required…and that was  the ability to connect to emotion.  To fully activate the Sword, one had to  not only be cold and calculating, but they had to be heartless to the point of being cruel and the only way to achieve that extreme distance from emotion, they had to first experience it.  When Kanki was chosen by the council, Icicle noticed she had potential, and deliberately chose not to foster it.  He would not train her in the Iceweaving Sword forms, but he would condition her by using her as a training dummy to keep his fighting skills up to par.  In battle, he would use her as bait, or a decoy to lure his enemies in, with no regard as to whether she survived or not.  He saw her as a tool and made sure she  was aware of that. She figured out how to operate the training swords, Icepick and Icespike on her own.  It was during the Quest for Poseidon’s Trident that she met and became acquainted with the other Undersea Swordsmen and their apprentices.  She observed the different ways the other apprentices were treated in comparison to her own and began to reassess her situation, and ways to improve it.

Killer Frost: Kanki; Sword of Sommersa

While under the apprenticeship to Icicle, Frost was constantly abused by him; which included verbal, physical, and emotional.  It was during the Poseidon's Trident Quest, that she first saw the interactions of the the other Swords with their apprentices and noticed the vast differences in how she was treated in relation to them.  Not only were some treated with respect, but they were given lessons on how to properly utilize their training swords in preparation to being taught the swordforms themselves.  Some even had enough trust in their apprenetices to allow them to utilize the sword, not just in training but in battle as well.  The Quest was an unprecedented gathering that hadn't occurred since the times of the creation of the mystical swords that they carried. Eventually, their quest led them to a labyrinthine tomb with mystical wards all around.  The Swords and their apprentices encountered deathtrap after deathtrap in the underwater catacomb, and even got split up on two separate occasions: one with the all the swords separated from their apprentices, and once when each sword wound up with an apprentice other than their own.  Aquaman, Prince Kaizen of Atlantis wound up with Frost.  During their time together it was revealed that Icicle’s abuse included rape.  Eventually, they all convened in a chamber that had extremely powerful wards throughout it. Upon seeing Icicle, Aquaman flew into a rage and was stopped from slaying him by Frost.  They studied the runes in the chamber hoping to prevent yet another of the labyrinth's deadly traps.  Charybdis, The Sword of Rhakotis; one of the more rash and impetuous Swords, unwittingly released a monster from a prison that was so painstakingly hidden.  Aquaman fled when he was the only one of his companions not to fall victim to one of the creatures mind controlling spores.  After being on the run for a while, he had a recollection of some of runes he’d seen and one of the legends of Atlantis; Centuries ago, the Earth's atmosphere was breeched by an alien entity. It landed in the ocean, where it encountered a powerful sorcerer.  The warrior mage placed the entity in a state of suspended animation with his magic after a prolonged battle, and then buried it within a labyrinthine tomb with mystical wards all around to prevent it from ever resurfacing again.  Aquaman realized that the sorcerer that originally defeated the starfish generations ago was Arion, Lord of Atlantis and that he had hidden the Trident of Poseidon there as a means to defeat it again.  Aquaman returned to the location that had imprisoned the creature, only to find it defended by the remaning samurai.  He and his companion engaged them and Aquaman was able to maneuver them all into position to active the release of the Trident by using the Swords as keys.  After retrieving the trident, he took it to help defeat the beast, but in the process, the trident was flung back out into the sea.  The samurai resumed their quest and eventually found it.  However there was a debate as to who would claim it.  An agreement was made; a battle would commence, and the last man standing would claim the sword.  That man was Kaizen.  With that settled, they returned to their kingdoms to use the trident to fight off the horde of colossal sea creatures attempting to  slaughter the citizens.  It was during the final battle that Icicle used, not only many of his Iceweaving skills, but his most secret technique to stop one of the monsters summoned by Kompera, to save the lives of his team. After seeing this, Frost stabs him from behind with his own sword. She had been keeping an eye on him the entire time she was with him, and had now seen him use all of his techniques.  She claimed the sword, as well as the title Killer Frost. She took his bloodstained headband, along with some other articles of his armor, after scalping his ponytail and wearing it as a trophy around her waist. It is on Aqualad's Missing Master Quest, that it is discovered that she has taken the apprentice...

Icemaiden: Kōriotome; Icepick and Icespike
Apprentice to The Sword of Sommersa

A royal of Sommersa, she has been sheltered, but was chosen by Killer Frost against the wishes of the Council of Elders. Kōriotome is extremely intelligent, even by the standards of Sommersa, but was unsatisfied in her day to day life.  When she was chosen, she experienced a glimmer of something that she had never felt before…excitement.  However, she is very naïve, and Killer Frost is subtly trying to corrupt her and turn her against everything she's ever known. She is the first royal to be bound to the sword, and is more acquineted with giving orders than taking them.  Killer Frost is a harsh master, but not abusive.  She trains her more than she was when she was in her position, but still has a lot of that training grounded in a “sink or swim” mentality.  Her training swords Icepick and Icespike absorb energy (especially heat) to train for Iceweaving. They have to make contact with the object they are attempting to drain, but can also absorb ambient heat or energy from the air.  This is an assist for the the sword by creating cold conditions for the Sword of Sommersa to operate better.  She is the daughter of the most prominent family in Sommersa, so there were many who were not happy within the royal families and the Council of Elders when Killer Frost broke tradition to choose her as her apprentice…especially Kōriotome’s parents.  Because of the priviledges that have been allotted to The Sword (and the threat she posed if angered), they were hard pressed to  deny Killer Frost’s request.  When Kōriotome acquires the Sword directly preceding the Missing Master Quest, she is forced to quickly choose a replacement.  She is approached by Barron Blizzard; a representative of the Council, who sees this as an opportunity to take advantage of her inexperience. Her naivety allows her to be swayed to choose the apprentice...

Freeze: Kōru; Icepick and Icespike
Apprentice to The Sword of Sommersa

Kōru is a very cold and calculating boy. He is chosen to be apprentice so that the Council can have control over the sword again, but he has his own sinister agenda.  Freeze is a part of a faction that exists in Sommersa who believe that there is still unexplored elements of science that are rejected in their community…namely sorcery.  While Sommersa was the kingdom’s scientific enclave, the Holy City of Shindagha was its concentration of religious and mystical practices.  The combination of the mystical with the scientific came across as an abomination to either faction, so a group who theorized a combination were possible kept quiet and practiced developing their art and research in secret.  Ailanöra was a young devotee in the pursuits of what has been come to be known in  other circles as Mys-tech; the combination of science and sorcery.  However, her experimentation alongside her partner, Kōru ended up with her in a constant state of stasis to protect herself and those around her.  He knew he needed powerful magic to rectify her status and restore her, so he did what was necessary to become the prime candidate for the apprentice to the sword and plotted with Barron Blizzard, who persuades Icemaiden to take Freeze as apprentice for the good of the empire. After the climax of the Missing Master Quest, Killer Frost is left with Freeze as her new apprentice when Icemaiden quits. Kōriotome, now going only by Ice teams up with Fire after she too is dismissed from service by her returned master, Siren for the apprentice that was chosen by the Sword of Su’ Phalla; Fever.

- Kanki = heavy frost  厳しい寒気
- Kōri = Synonym for ice; 氷 (こおり); otome = maiden
- Kōru = to freeze
- Technocracy; a proposed system of governance where decision-makers are selected on the basis of their expertise in their areas of responsibility, particularly scientific knowledge. Leadership skills for decision-makers are selected on the basis of specialized knowledge and performance, rather than political affiliations or parliamentary skills
- Oligarchy; a form of power structure in which power rests with a small number of people. These people may be distinguished by nobility, wealth, family ties, education or corporate, religious or political, military control. Such states are often controlled by families who typically pass their influence from one generation to the next, but inheritance is not a necessary condition for the application of this term
- Icicle is based on the dc comics character, Joar Mahkent. I decided to keep his name.
- Joar is prudent and cannot easily be influenced, as he possesses an extraordinary resistance to blatant persuasion or goading.  However, if he feels an action or lack of one is in his best interest, he will change course from a predetermined path.
- Due to his duplicitous nature, Joar suffers from paranoia.  He is fairly anxious; and although he gives the appearance of someone who approaches people easily and with conviction, he does however develop inferiority complexes that are difficult to analyze.
- The sea monster that the Swords released from the Heart of the Labyrinth was an alien being in the form of a giant starfish, which was known as; The Conqueror Star.  Its release of mind controlling spores throughtout the planet’s populace(above and below the sea) was the catalyst to the formation of the Justice League.
- The companion that accompanied Aquaman to retrieve the Trident of Posiedon was, The Flash.
- The Way of the Swords is the system of guidelines that the Undersea Samurai live and die by.  They are an agreed upon set of practices that, for the most part were following the example of their forebears and Arion himself.  Some of these include; The Rule of Two (one master, one apprentice), Posession Challenges, Defense of the Realm
- Most of the citizens of Sommersa have either white or pale blue eyes.  Kanki was an anomaly as her emotion shone through in her eyes, altering their hue to bright red.  This led to her ostrization.
- In completely embracing the Heart of Ice philosophy that allows for complete mastery of Iceweaving, Icicle’s eyes have become a deep dark blue his cold hearted killer instinct.
- During the final battle, Icicle defended Frost for the first time after she had gotten injured giving him the time he needed to summon one of his more powerful Iceweaving attacks.  As a sign of the respect he had never shown her, he gave her his prized headband that he kept pristine clean to her, to  stop the bleeding.
- After (litteraly) stabbing him in the back, Frost proclaimed that by risking his life for her and the other swords, Icicle was no longer worthy to be Sword as he had abandoned the  principles of the Heart of Ice.  She then decapitated him, beore taking parts of his outfit for herself and claiming the title of Sword of Sommersa by right of Combat and Possesion.
- Killer Frost took Joar’s disembodied head back to Sommersa with her to substantiate her claim to the Council of Elders.
- It will be discovered later on that Icicle’s mistreatment of Frost had a basis in her background that she was unaware of. This discovery factors into why she broke tradition to chose the apprentice that she did.
- I merged the characters of Ice and Icemaiden into one character.
- Icemaiden’s design is based on the Koei Samurai Warriors series character, Nene.
- Kōriotome will have a different outfit as the Sword of Sommersa during the Missing Master Quest, and another one when she goes independent with Fire from Su’ Phalla.
- At some point, both Killer Frost and Icemaiden will adopt the Heart of Ice, but they will not be able to maintain it 24/7 like Icicle did; a distinction that separates him as a Swordmaster.
- Breaking tradition once again, Killer Frost allows Ice to leave her Service to the Sword with her complete memories in tact.  She does this as a punishment after the revelation of certain secrets.
- Freeze is the MDCU equivalent of Batman villain, Mr. Freeze.
- Frost and Freeze have similar elements in their apprentice outfits.  Ice doesn’t share them as she comes from a different class than they do.
- When they were still one kingdom, the Royal Capital City of Atlantis housed the Ministry of Science and its representative from Sommersa.  Since The Great Sinking, the head of the most prominent Royal family in Sommersa is still referred to as The Prime Minister.
- Barron Blizzard was aware of Freeze’s connections to the the order developing mys-tech, but was in the dark in regards to his ambitions.  His goal was to position himself as Prime Minister.
- The next Blades of Sommersa pic will include: Icemistress (Sword of Somersa), Icicle Jr (Joar’s son), Beluga (Sea Shaman apprentice), Coldsnap, and Winter.
- The Cycle of Swords is the Strength/Weakness relationship they have to one another. For the Sword of Sommersa; Water< Ice < Wind

I'd have to say it's a toss up between Killer Frost and Freeze. Freeze just looks downright menacing for having a somewhat simpler design than the others, and Killer Frost scores major points for her smug "Come at me, bro" face. Sorry for giving the other characters the cold shoulder.

Hahaha...! Thanks for the feedback. I am proud of each of the designs for different reasons, but I am glad those resonated with you! I’m looking forward to designing Icicle jr and his swords as well as Ice after she gives up her ties to the sword. I’ve already designed her look as The Sword.
