Waking Autumn --
Every year, when the first flakes of snow begin to fall in the north, Autumn returns to sleep, dreaming of bright colors, warm winds, and the bounty of nature's harvest. She sleeps through the darkness of Winter, the warming winds of Spring, and even the brightness of Summer.

As the Summer air begins to cool, the firebirds spread their wings and leave their distant homes, coming to gather in the deepest parts of this ancient forest to bring life and light to the shrine where Autumn sleeps. They dance amongst branches heavy-laden with rare, golden apples, scorching the leaves until they fall from the trees, and warming the stones of the shrine until Autumn wakes.

With her first words, she brings fire to the birds that awoke her, kindling their rebirth with a living flame that exists nowhere else in the world. The firebirds, newly young and rejuvenated by the purifying fires, then spread their wings and race on warm winds away from the shrine, returning to their year-long homes and bringing with them the bright colors of Autumn. Where they travel, trees turn to rivers of scarlet and gold, grasses dry to brittle stalks, and fruit ripens to sweet plumpness on the vine, the world celebrating the return of the firebirds and the awakening of Autumn.

Though they are few, some firebirds stay by Autumn's side, year-long, watching over her and guarding the sacred stones that protect the essence of the season against any and all who dare approach the shrine. Although they never, themselves, ever feel the healing fires of Autumn's touch, they have fires of their own that are turned upon any would-be intruders. The rejuvenating properties of the golden apples growing within the shrine keep them ever-living... and ever-watchful.
