I've never heard that idiom before, but that's what this represents in a sense. A rock and a hard place.
It's interesting you brought this up because I considered making the figure more like stone.Β

This scene is very touching. Even if I keep repeating myself.
Often works from you hit me to the core.
The technique, the color choice, the mood created, all that is great.
But other than that ... it's the stories that releaseΒ mind journeys in my head. The memory of a feeling, a place where you have often found yourself.
A sea of tears of self-pity, in which one threatens to drown.
I have seen this picture many times in front of me, in different variants. I would also like to tell you about a similar idea.
I love the symbols, the flies (you know I'm a fan) and the fish above all else. I see so many contrasts in this picture and at the same time a logical sequence. It is a pictorial oxymoron to me.
You have the gift to generate a lot of resonance with very little (stylistic devices, symbols, ..).

Flying and swimming,
water and air ...
Water is a symbol of life; flies of death, they already orbiting him like vultures and waiting for his demise.
