Description My vod Derek and myself were watching the new episode of the clone wars on Friday after some Friday Night Magic and such and we were discussing the "in universe" evolution of the 501st.

At the beginning of the series (and roughly the beginning of the war) the 501st is a simple company lead by Captain Rex (that is why a Captain is in charge of it).

It's the 501st Torrent Company of the 7th Sky Corps (which is a part of I think the 3rd Sector Army, though I may be mistaken on that). The 7th is an elite battle outfit lead by Kenobi and Skywalker that includes the Open Circle Fleet as well as such units as the 212th Attack Battalion (the orange clones seen in ROTS). The 501st Torrent Company (the five hundred and first company of some group, initially) was all but wiped out at Teth . . . . of the 165 men in the company only 7 survived the battle . . .

The 501st was rebuilt, and later on as the Elite unit was expanded, it became the 501st Battalion (the moniker of the battalion was not mentioned in the episode, but one could assume it's still Torrent). That is during the middle year of the war.

By Operation Knightfall, the third year of the clone wars, the 501st went on to be a Legion - which is a hell of a lot bigger than a Company, and almost as big as a Corps.

And while it lost the Torrent moniker and came to be known as Vader's Fist, it kept the original Company designation of the 501st, and my Vod and I were wondering why . . . and we decided it must have been Teth.

For those of you who did not read the clone wars BOOK - the movie doesn't give as much detail into the fate of the clones as the book does - the last seven men of that company held back roughly two battalions of droids . . . so you're looking at probably close to 5,000 droids . . . . against less than 200 clones . . . .

That's pretty kriffing epic.

And we decided that must be why they kept that number, because the 501st probably has the same symbolism to the clones as the 300 Hundred Spartans does today.

It means "this is a military outfit of badass motherf**kers."

Sorry for the long description, but I needed to give the reasoning for this epic picture.

yeah

What book do you reference? I'd actually be pretty interested in reading that... Do you mean the one written on the movie?

yeah, the clone wars novel by karen traviss . . . if you liked the Republic Commando novels that was even better, she did a marvelous job . . . it actually made me hurt for Ventress and Dooku, to understand their regrets . . .

The only Clone Wars novel by her that I knew about was "No Prisoners" - which was a fantastic read. Didn't know she wrote others (besides the RepCom books). I'll have to look into them. Thanks!
