Wanted to expand Melee's roster past it's 25/26 character roster. This roster includes 42 characters, meaning there are 17 newcomers. The characters are also tied to the time Melee was released, meaning they existed and were popular or new at the time of Melee's release, and would therefore be realistic additions to the roster.Related content

It seemed realistic for the time when Melee was released. Pokemon was huge, and there were only two generations of Pokemon at the time. The first generation was still a hot topic, so adding another rep from it would make sense in 2001. Maybe not Eevee, since its popularity spiked a lot more in recent time than it was in 2001. Regardless, Charizard was a possibility too, but he has a Poke Ball in Melee so I decided against it.

Come to think of it, the Poke Ball was the only thing stopping me from adding Suicune as a second Gen. 2 rep.

Why not just add Suicune then? It's not as if there aren't other Pokemon that couldn't serve the same purpose as a Pokeball Pokemon.
