Description I'm starting to finish more paintings instead of just drawing dozens of half finished ones :3

I love how soft and peaceful this piece is!
The muted colours and the almost glowing appearance of the hair are so nice!
I also love the shadows of flowers and plants under the water. Really nice details.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks, I'm happy to hear that you like it
I'm slowly getting to a point where I'm satisfied with how the water looks (since that gave me quite some trouble).

Well I like your water, it's subtle, but it gets the point across. If nothing else, the water in this piece fits the overall style of the artwork. Even if you don't like the look yet, it wouldn't be much fun if you nailed the look you were going for the first time every time! Trying to find the perfect, satisfying, appearance is how we learn and grow!

That's true, it wouldn't be as much fun if painting were easy^^

Hello~ I found this piece from ProjectComment
>.< This is my very first time to do a critique from a group project thing so I do apologize if I sound...harsh or weird.... >.<;; If you want me to expand on anything afterwards, please do not hesitate to ask!! And please tell me if this critique makes sense q__q

The good ~
Well first off, I LOVE the feeling this art piece gives. There is a serene and peaceful like atmosphere while floating on water. The colors of forest palette you have used also emphasizes a sense of being one with nature. I love Elves so if she is one, you definitely captured her quite well being one with nature. Another aspect I love is the lighting you have done. You have the focal upon her face and then faded effect outwards. The hair also have amazing details. I love the movement of the hair as well where each strand is floating away from her. I also like how you have differentiate the light values on the clothes indicating where the water is and is not. I also like the jewelry accents you have included- design itself, lighting, and placement.

The bad ~
Hmm...I would like to say this piece is not THAT bad but it is definitely not finish feeling compared to your other painting pieces. What I mean by this is when "completing" the piece, I think you miss an extra highlight white to make the painting pop or a sense of ka-pow. For example in this piece - Follow me into the woods  , there are white lights on the trees and on the boys' arms. In this piece [[ Emerald - Revisited  ]], although definitely more sketchy, there is more a sense of completion due to the bright highlights on the outline of the face and where it is shining from the necklace. In THIS particular piece, yes there is a sense of light value and I really DO love how the fading effect but there is just not enough highlight to indicate a source of light compared the other two pieces I have mentioned.
Face just needs a highlight here and there (same with the necklace jewelry)) but the hair....the light value in the many, many beautiful strands are diluted and looks like most of all hair strands are underwater. Also, I think because of the hair light values are diluted, I am unsure if she is truly floating on water or coming out of a magic portal. If I remember correctly, in magic portals, the light value upon the hair is what you are doing now because a part of the character will be forced through while the rest of the body is left behind. However, I truly believe your aim is water because you have indicated it quite well around the shoulders, clothes, and neck area. If you want a sense of floating, then there should be a sense of floating in the hair as well. Some of the strands should be floating especially if she have a very long hair. These hair strands should also have the dramatic lighting effect you have treated on the clothes she is wearing - to indicate the floating sensation.

The improvement ~
The big one for me is the water areas of the hair as it needed more love as you done with the other areas of the piece. I honestly think that is just the major place that you need to improve on to make this art piece truly pop. I do love the clothing design but I have a hard time figuring out if that's a coat or a hood coat. I am just imagining how she would look like out of water. Hah~ However, I still do think the clothing fits with the overall character design. If you feel ambitious, you can add flower lilies to the piece to emphasize she is on water. Water effects and ripples could also be played into here but I do not think it is actually necessary to pull off the feeling of serenity you already achieved in here.
As always, your choice of color is a major strength and with this piece, it is just as strong indication. Light value for drama effect is definitely your strong point and when comparing to previous artworks, this piece shows quite an improvement as well. There is definitely more refined drama light in this piece. Your sense of space of negative and positive is effectively pulled off in here as well especially since I think your center composition is rather hard to pull off otherwise. I was browsing through your galla and I rarely see a front face position so for you to effectively do it here, in your own aesthetic style, is a major improvement in itself. You have definitely improved on the face portions and showing emotions. There is also a consistency of style between this piece and previous artworks.

Overall, I truly love this piece. Finish or unfinished, I seriously think you have a great potential!! I really love the improvement if you have achieved so far and I look forward seeing more art from you!!

Thanks for this well thought out critique, it's quite helpful and I really appreciate it^^
The way you structured your comment is great and it means a lot to me that you took your time to look through my gallery in order to get a grasp of my general abilities.

Originally she was supposed to be a spirit of nature (since this painting is loosely based on an older one) however, once I got to the details I changed it to an elf since it fit the image. I'm glad that you still got this type of mood from the image.
I think the main problem with the image is that the water is not well defined enough to actually read as what it is. Concerning you're comment about the highlights, I don't think I would get away with adding anything too harsh without destroying the current lighting scheme/mood. I'll definitely try to add more floating hair strands since as you mentioned that would help the image a lot. Your suggestions for improvement seem quite fitting and perhaps I'll add some water lilies since I originally planned to include them but then they got kind of lost in the painting process.

Oh and I did some quick edits so I hope it reads at least a bit better now (even if I haven't changed anything too major right now since that would take a bit more time).

Very serene and calm, you chose the colors well :3 I couldn't tell at first but I can see that she is in water, you did that very nice too. Great job!
