Description I needed some way to carry around my standard tools , so I made a foldable tool purse. It is supposed to hang from your side when sitting on a chair, so that everything is easily accessible. Sewn in a somewhat stretchy sheep skin, by hand with waxed linen thread. Total worktime is approximately six hours.

The panels are my first attempt at wet-shaping leather patterns. It turned out a lot better than I thought, but took a bit more time than planned. (Note to self; do not put new leatherwork in a backpack together with sharp oblects, they leave scratches.)

THAT, my friend, looks suspiciously like a set of thieve's tools from D&D....

Well, lockpicking is a craft as well...

rather shocked no one's asked yet, but i gotta know.  what kinds of tools are in there!  i know that's an adjustable marking scribe in the centre and obviously needles and i think that's a spool of waxed linen thread in the tube.  then it looks like you have a leather awl at the bend.  the rest are rather unidentifiable.  the wood/metal tool on the far left looks like some kind of hole punch/plug cutter?

From the left there is a splicing tool  and an awl. The large cross-like shape is a strap cutter, for making long and even straps. The two tools to the right is a edge-cutter (beveler tool?) and a spur.
The tool at the mend may look like an awl, but is actually a marlin spike(wider than an awl), for making agilet holes. The tube is linen thread, as you observed, and the wool piece is for keeping needles.
The plier on the left picture is also stored under the wool piece.

strap cutter!  ugh, i should have known that.  then again, i'm also familiar with carpentry hand tools as well and it just looked like what you'd mark mortise boundaries and tenon shoulders with for some reason.  yes, you are correct in calling it an edge beveler.  because that's exactly what it does.   marlin spike, yeah alright.  i'm not familiar with the splicing tool so i'll have to research that, but it sounds like something i might find use for.  well, thanks for telling us what they are.  it's a fantastic idea and i can see how much of a useful bit of kit that is.

The splicing tool seems to be called a "Fid", or a "Swedish Fid" in english.
Useful for both splicing and tight lacing.

No problem. I'm glad to help.

oh yes....the almighty fid!  again, i should have known that.  after all, what else is spliced but rope.

Hi! nice work there

is there any historical evidence for this kind of bag?

Noctiped In reply to WhiskyAddict [2013-07-29 03:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

No, the folding-out function is just my idea of functionality. The general shape, material and decoration is made to get as close to historical as possible.

That is very well done. But doesn't it get in the way when you're not working?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Noctiped In reply to PierreHusted [2013-02-23 07:29:25 +0000 UTC]

No, not really. When it is folded up you can tie it into place with the leather cords, making it the size of a normal belt purse.
It is perhaps a tiny bit heavier than a normalö one, but that is not really noticable if you don't think about it.

Maybe I'll steal your idea.

That's totally fine by me.
Just give me a shout when you're done so I can take a peek at it.

Thank you.

På LSDU körde jag en lite annan modell på armborstreparation; jag hade med mig en helt extra bågstav med sträng, så att det bara var att surra fast en ny om staven skulle råka gå av.

kickfoot In reply to Noctiped [2012-12-13 06:17:58 +0000 UTC]

ahh, klipskt!

Noctiped In reply to kickfoot [2012-12-13 17:30:10 +0000 UTC]

Noctiped In reply to kickfoot [2012-12-14 06:55:32 +0000 UTC]

Det viktiga är att välja skinn i god kvalitet. Jag har testat några andra garvningar och tjocklekar, och de dör ganska fort.

That's awesome! I love how it organizes your leather tools and looks like something you could take to an event and not feel bad carrying it around.

Noctiped In reply to Demara [2012-12-12 04:59:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.
That was one of the thoughts with it. I have used another bag for carrying tools in, [link] , but it is a bit too big for quickly finding the right tool. It will be fun to see if this construction works better.

Thank you.
I am also quite excited about how it will age. The skin I used gets a really nice brown color after some use,
and the surface gets shinier. And of course the tools will shape it perfect for carrying the tools.

I actually feared that they would take up too much focus, and
the bag itself would disappear, but they turned out just right.

Well, "improving" sounds like a lot of work. I'll probably do a half-assed job, get frustrated then drop it for like a month. Then I'll do it again right... Sad, but seems to be the way I work.

Noctiped In reply to sgainbrachta [2012-12-11 18:30:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, my pile of dead project tends to be quite lasting. If I don't work at a project for about three months chance is I never will finish it. But I always try to do my best from the beginning. I believe in the end we get about the same stuff done in the same time, but in different ways.
