Guidelines: long thin legs; small pointy head.

Another creature I designed last year - I'd go crazier with my creatures' design and I usually do, but my teacher guided me through the process and prevented me from picking a final design with some super twisted anatomy. Which is good I've learnt a lot and I hope I'll be able to create new monstrosities with more original, yet believable anatomy.

It's been like... what, six months? And I already see a lot of stuff to fix.

Criticism always welcome

Wow! I really like how real/natural it looks even thoughΒ it is cel-shaded. Please tell me you have some tutorials or some quick tips for your style of coloring.

This is so amazing, I love it! And, um, you have a TEACHER for this kind of stuff? What is it exactly, a class or something etc?

nondev In reply to ImmaCatastrophe [2014-04-23 12:07:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Yup, it was a Creature Design class. We had a selection of vague guidelines to choose from and then develop concepts and studies for a creature design. The final step was a digital painting of the beast

OMG OMG is this in University? or High-school? What kind of University/High-school is it cuz this is TOTALLY the kind of thing i would take as a class!!!

University - it's a Digital Art academy located in Florence I'm studying Entertainment Design. It's about concept art and character/environment/creature design for videogames, animation and movies. It prepares us for the fields of illustration, graphic design and publishing too, so we have taken many illustration courses, working with both digital and traditional media.Β
Where are you from? I'm pretty sure North America and most European States have lots of very good universities with similar courses! Italy is always behind when it comes to this kind of "modern" things.Β

love the claw thing at the end of each forearm, I have a similar idea for a creature I call a bladerex. I actually named it bladark

Love the tail and the crest, and both for being so harmonious with its beak. The darkness of its talon-ends and feet, contrasted with the lightness of its plumage, really gives it a classy effect. (like the siamese cat) The legs look a little set far apart, but in the end, it still gives a centred and balanced feel, so it's not worrying. Pelvic scales are a nice touch. The tailspurs too. They made the tail look so solid, which is more anatomically-correct for raptors then the flaccid-looking tails you see on most illustrations that just don't seem rigid enough for counterweight steering.

i'm guessing this is for a snowier habitat, so there's always room for u to explore a tropical version of the Tarcan -- which will no doubt be a fun idea to muse with..!

And yeah, both this and the other creature are designed to live in snowy habitats - but I'd love to try a differently-adapted version!

Thank you! I've been given some useful advice on those feathers during the exam (some don't really make sense XD) so I guess I'll fix a few things sooner or later. Glad you like it, though!
