Description
Now were onto the seventh and final Koopaling in this picture series, the youngest Koopaling Larry Koopa (known as Cheatsy Koopa in the cartoon series) as... Err... Larry King? Larry Mullen Jr.? Or just a Mario character that looks like a Larry?
All right, all right, let's hold up a minute. So, out of the Koopalings, name wise, poor Larry's a bit of an odd one here, which is probably why he's naked and not sure whether to play the drums or plug in that radio microphone and start talking.
When the Koopalings were first introduced, many sources like Nintendo Power magazine initially stated that Larry was named after the talk show host Larry King (1933-2021), with him being a famous bearer of that name. But, when Dayv Brooks was asked about it in an interview in 2012, he seemingly cleared it up once and for all by stating that he was named after Larry Mullen Jr. (1961-) the drummer from the Irish rock band U2, so that way he would have been named after a musician like his older siblings (yeah, Morton’s namesake also dabbled in some music too, aside from his TV show).
However, in another interview with Brooks in late 2015 (not long after Lemmy’s death), he contradicted his statement from 3 years ago, claiming Larry was not named after anyone in particular and I quote “There’s no real-world equivalent. He’s not Larry Mullen Jr. from U2 or Larry King. He just looked like a Larry.” When I first found out about this, I was quite baffled at that. I personally was fine with his original statement of Larry being named after a musician. But, who can say? Maybe in the 2012 interview, he was caught on the spot and just thought of a musician called Larry just so he could answer the question, then had some time to reflect and answer the question again properly in the 2015 interview? I don’t know.
Well, this officially wraps up this picture series and it sure was fun drawing the Koopalings like this and getting to do a bit more research on them.
