Actually, fanfiction has been around a lot longer than that. Though I do believe that is around when the term "Fanfiction" became a thing.

Fanfiction in it's semi current format has been around since at least the turn of the last century- there were a bunch of fan written Sherlock Holmes stories- but yes, the term was coined in the 60s.Β It could reasonably be argued that a large amount of Shakespearean works {Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Henry V ect} were also all fanfictions.
Even historic works including Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory , Geffory of Monmouth Hisoria Regum Brittanniea and basically all other adaptations of Arthurian legend were also in current terminology, fanfiction.
I'm sure there are others, but that's what comes to mind!

Well, technically it could be argued that fanfiction has been around since the beginning of literature. I mean, the story of Romeo & Juliet was around long before Shakespeare. That being said, the term was coined in the 60s.
