its a furnace that was used to smelt iron ore and create pig iron ..this furnace was once inside a big building but all that is long gone now ..the dam was used to turn the turbines that powered the furnace ..actually you can look up Beckley furnace on line or even at Wikipedia for more info and more pictures

That's what had me confused. I was thinking the furnace was built that way, to be outside. I'd never heard of such a thing before. But now I understand it was once part of a building.  Thanks for explaining, Paul. !

you're welcome dear ..when i first found this place i was wondering the same thing till i read some of the info signs they have strewn around ..like i said go to Wikipedia they have a shot of the original building
