Description Okay, so, about this image:

In a seriously short space of time, this image has gone from being one thing to another.

requested a wallpaper for her recently formatted computer with orange/blue colouration, so I made a simple planet sphere with two seperate light sources as nothing more than a practice for making her piece. Now I know the whole dual nebula dual colour on planet thing is a bit overdone and clichΓ©, but at the time, this was nothing more than a warmup exercise that became something else.

But then, under advice from I became intoxicated with Alcohol and found myself coming up with a new way of making nebulas, which quickly found themselves merged with the image. A spiffy planet was added, and voila, Photon!

So here is my latest deviation! I hope you like it.

PS. It comes in 1280x1024 flavour too, but I won't post it unless people request it. Partly because I'm not sure many people still use that resolution, and secondly, because I don't know how to the whole wallpaper pack thing on dA works!

x

Edit:

Done a particularly hefty edit to this. Still not overly convinced on it, but I think I'm getting there now.

Altered the composition and lighting fall on the planet.

Altered the texture fall on the planet.

Altered the moon to look a bit more moon-like.

Brightened up the stars a little.

Any thoughts?

Nice graphics, those colors acutally bring out more of that planets surface.[link]

really nice image there. I love the color and the subtleness of the cloud. The "photons"/ stars are really cool too.

Maybe you could add a little bit of depth to the planet texture. It looks a bit flat if you ask me.

The main planet, or the moon?

MorgothAinu In reply to novaxeros [2010-05-09 17:07:33 +0000 UTC]

The main planet because that's the main eye catcher. The moon is a "side" object and shouldn't draw to much attention to it (at least that is my opinion ).

Alright, I'll see what I can do to add a bit of depth. I have a few ideas.

If you find yourself stuck, Greg Martin has a wonderfull tutorial for drawing planets. There is a section in it where he adds some depth to his planet (very usefull, I always use that technique )

Yeah, I tend to use that depth technique too, but for this planet, I actually didn't do that. Something to do with the cloud map I created I think, can't remember exactly though. I have an idea how I could incorporate it however, so I will give it a try sometime tonight, or at least some point over the coming week.

Yeh I agree. I was looking at this and thinking that the middle part of the planet looks a bit flat. The edges are great but the middle doesn't have enough curvature.

i'm likin this one, great fire and ice look on either side of the planet going on here. the two moons are a great addition, they just sort of...epic-ize it

Since this was made for me. I best comment on it . I really love the way you combined the two complimentary colours as they do contrast too dramatically, yet the mixture of warm light and cool light give it an eery feel. The composition and placement of those nebula's are just lovely.

I do agree with another comment saying it looks like the moon is touching the planet slightly. But I'm sure if you tweeked it a bit you could make it better.

Love it.

"I really love the way you combined the two complimentary colours as they do contrast too dramatically"

I should proofread my comments. What I meant to say was.

"As they -don't- contrast too dramatically." Whoops.

novaxeros In reply to QAuZ [2010-05-09 13:10:19 +0000 UTC]

It is not a mask I don't believe. This is new. How does one shot moon shadow mask?

Hmm, it seems you didn't get that

novaxeros In reply to QAuZ [2010-05-09 13:25:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking I didn't either. You think I can improve the moon's shadow perhaps? I keep looking at it and thinking there's something about it I don't like..

I just realised what you're saying, and my god! You're a downright genius! How did I miss the mask layers! I'm gonna do the change now. Can't BELIEVE I missed that, I really can't..
