Now in iray!I did the test renders seen below without changing any of the 3delight materials I had used.
but for the final image, I decided to tweak the special effect / spell effects a bit. Took ages to render as is the norm every time I try to render a full scene on my PC, but in the end, I think it was worth it

The glowing effects are cool! I love a good special effect
However, the 3Delight seems to show the details better. The effects, while there, are not the major focus (although the staircase is easier to see in Iray). Also, Sven is more noticeable in 3Delight
All depends on what you want to get across

Special effects can look either way in iray. Since they can emit light, you can really get them to pop, but on the other hand, the moment the start emitting light, they are adding additional light to your scene. More than half that light on Sven is from his sword
It does. I like 3delight for the more cartoon / animated look, whereas iray gives me that dose of ‘realism’

Oh wow. The change in lighting with iray really just makes the whole thing sing! The sword is just incredible! And I love the Jarl’s expression and the weight of the sword in his hands. Fantastic!

It does! That sword is a really old Daz (or poser) prop. I changed all the surfaces with iray shaders

In my (limited) experience Iray looks so much better. Makes me wonder why anyone uses 3Delight any longer?

In addition to the longer rendering time, if I let Iray go too long, it crashes the computer so hard a few other programs are knocked back to their defaults. Whereas I can just let 3Delight run while I sleep, go to work, whatever

Can’t vouch for others, but from my PoV, close to 90 per cent of my content is 3delight, primarily because they are all Genesis / Genesis 2 characters. In fact, I have only 2 recurring characters who are G3. My G8 library is mostly a ghost town 
And, the more important reason, it takes too long to render on my system. A fully loaded 3delight scene takes around 5-15 mins depending on the scene. A half loaded scene in iray (i.e. just a character) takes a minimum of half an hour to 2 hours. A fully loaded scene like you see above took 4 hours to render. In contrast, the 3delight version was done in 15 mins.
So, I totally love iray for the single panel renders! But when I’m rendering a 50 panel story, its 3delight all the way! I currently cannot justify a graphics card upgrade (that would bring down render times) since the computer works perfectly for the job I put it together for, and I don’t make any money off my renders
