This is just PERFECT. It really is. I don't know what to say about it! I love all the details -- the trim on her tunic, the buckles, the belts, the bell-holster, the expressions, the light interlocking of their fingers that takes on such a solemn tone when you match it with their faces, and the snoooooow(flaaaaakes?). How did you make the cloudy/snowy effect in the background? It's just gorgeous! This is so exactly how I picture them... now I want to go read Sabriel again.

Oooooh. I'll have to try that! It looks really nice when you do it; something about the very soft cloudy layers of paint, so it's all sort of misty snow-in-the-air-ish in addition to the flakes.

OHMYGOD, LOVE. Those books are like the best thing that ever happened to fiction...and yup, that's them! I love the snow, and I really love their hands, and I am forever in awe of your watercoloring skillz.

Aaah, yay, I am so glad that you think the characters look right. I love the world of that series so much, with the contrast between the pseudo-10's/20's setting vs. the more fantastical elements on each respective side of the Wall.
Thanks so much for the compliments! Painting has definitely been an ongoing process (and wow, some of my early attempts are pretty cringe inducing for me! Let's stop looking at those). And I am eternally in awe of your prowess with inks! I find ink SO intimidating.

Ok the snow came out brilliat, really love that. how did you do it? I love her color scheme, and I want that tunic with its awesome flared bottom. I'm especially wowed by his shirt because there is a lot of depth of color on the shadows and the offwhite parts (at least on my screen. Super serious guy there turned out very well, I really like the look of concentration and srius biznass. She looks sweet and concerned for him but I bet from the look of that bandolier and sword that she can kick some ass if needed to!

I did the snow by dotting the unpainted paper with clear acrylic medium, letting it dry, and then painting over it with the dark blue wash. I'm glad it turned out well!
Sabriel totally kicks the asses of the Greater Dead, you know it.

It's true, they're all like, "Well no one is using this decaying corpse, I'll just reanimate it to do my bidding". Selfish!

Garth Nix. He has a few other series that skew a little younger, I think, but the Old Kingdom books (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen, Across the Wall) are my favorites of his.
