Thank you. It's mostly vine charcoal, with some compressed charcoal sticks here and there to deepen the blacks and add highlights where I couldn't keep the eraser controlled, on cheap Wal*Mart sketch paper. The golden color is a happy accident that came from photographing (too big to fit on my scanner).

Well cool At first I thought the yellowed paper was the original paper color! But even with it just being Walmart paper, it looks great! Charcoal was always a hard medium for me, too dark and easily smudged. But you did a fantastic job with them, so keep up the good work

Thanks again. I desperately want to learn digital painting and such, but I found out quickly I also desperately need to learn value control first. (Don't get me started on color theory.) Since charcoal's pretty much nothing but infinitely variable values, I thought it be a good place to start.

But I find that I really, really enjoy it. I like that I can gradually build to higher and higher contrast and get different effects by using different objects to smudge it around (including fingertips). Plus there's just this very pretentious, "look at me being all Renaissance-y and drawing pictures with a piece of burnt stick" vibe that I enjoy.

I've tried digital painting in the past, and if given the chance, would still like to learn. It seems a lot harder than traditional though (to me at least). But that could just be from lack of experience xD Some say it's best to start with traditional and work up to digital though, so it's good that your learning to master values and such first. And I do agree that charcoal does have a nice "olden days" feel to it

The Mature Content joke, the contemplation of your own mortality, or are you having display issues with the picture?
