Description Acrylic on canvas board.

This is part of a mini-Merlin-exchange. It’s my exchange-gift for Goss, (who is an absolutely LOVELY artist, and it’s so nice to do something for someone whose work you have enjoyed so much.)

Based off her prompt “ "Protection” and hopefully including Merlin/Arthur and a hint of H/C.

Thank you very much, that's very nice of you to say.

Although several people commented that they fancied writing a story based off the painting, as far as I know, I don't think anyone ever did.

This is one of my favs... and sitting and looking at it I just realized that Merlin looks a tad like Winona Ryder here. Kind of suits him really..

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Guienvere137 [2013-03-23 09:45:13 +0000 UTC]

The idea behind the picture is that Merlin has been captured by bandits and Arthur is rescuing him. So this one isn't actually a sad picture once you know that.

This reminds me of a fic....but in that Arthur wears the bracelet and Merlin is forced to protect him in the beginning. Eventually they protect each other.. Lovely.

"The eye of the phoenix" episode? I love that episode, it's very close to how Arthurian legends should be, very epic/fairytale. I wish they had made more episodes like that. That's a great episode.

i would LOVE to read a fic about this picture! partly because its beautiful and full of gorgeous emotion, and partly because it raises so many questions.

why is merlin's wrist chained to his neck?

why isn't he wearing a shirt?

why does he have what appears to be slashmarks all over his body?

why is arthur suddenly being so protective?

WHY IS THIS PICTURE SO BEAUTIFUL AND TOUCHING AND SHIP-Y WHEN THE ONLY PHYSICAL CONTACT IS MERLIN'S HAND ON ARTHUR'S SHOULDER???

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Buecherwurm [2011-12-02 21:12:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

Yeah, I did A'level art at school, but it didn't teach me A THING to be honest. They just gave you a project and left you to it. No actual "teaching" went on at all.

It's one of my BIG bigbears with this country. The schools don't expect you to teach yourself how to do long division, or how to do chemistry...

But when it comes to art they don't actually TEACH perspective, or colour theory, or how to paint or anything...

They just expect you to work it out by yourself. It's why so many children get discouraged and this whole myth arises about "Oh, you're born with the skill".

No, you're not, you might have a certain aptitude, but the rest you learn.

No-one says, "Oh, he can't add five and six, he's not 'mathmatic'"...but they WILL say a similar thing if someone can't draw a chair.

There's this myth that either you just "know" it or you don't. No-one expects a kid to teach itself algebra, why do they think they will do the equivalent in art.

Sorry to ramble on for so long, it's one of my personal gripes.... *G* It annoys me so much, that so many peope who could gain SO much joy from creating art, end up leaving school thinking that "I'm not artistic" just because they've never had any decent teaching.

So no, everything I can do, I've taught myself from looking at paintings, or reading books, or watching the odd TV programme about painting.

And SOOOOOOO SORRY. I just sounded like Ranty McRanty there.

Ah no hard feelings I completly feel the same way ^^°. So it's not just your country -.- in Germany we don't have those A-levels stuff, so we all had till the 11th grade the same art courses. It wasn't really helpful, the teacher was like well now this is the topic here have some pencils and do something great with it >.> of course like you said there are some kids who pick it up very fast = talented, while the rest of us is untalented.

(My DA profile isn't that recent so please don't think *huh* that would crush my ego ^^°) I wanted to do more with arts, because they are great fun and also a good treatment for any emotional situation . So I got better after some time and what annoyed me the most was when some friends said, well you've got the hand for it, I can't do it ... it's like "No, I just really worked for this... - yes, yes *eye*roll*".

So they like degrade my working and say I just woke up and was better thant lets say a few years before. That annoys the hell out of me. Also my sister once came to me and drew some lines on a paper and was like, isn't that art and laughed and she was like noooo I can't draw, I could never do something about this and it's like grwaaaaahh! You never practised and now you have that attitude ?? Easy!

Well now you triggered me sorry I lost myself in this stuff...I liked the first chapter of betty edwards (I think in English the title is like; the new way of drawing at the right brain side) book when she like you told the reader, ok why do people expect people who want to learn to draw to already know how to draw, like I want to learn French because I already mastered it ??!

Damn this comment is long, forgive me ^.^ Are you know in some artsy kind of business?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. What with Christmas on the horizon real life is getting very busy.

Yes, I totally grinned at what you were saying about people thinking that you can just do it...a bit like some sort of magic...and not realising that it actually takes lots and lots of work to get better.

I've got that drawing on the right side of the brain book, it's really interesting.

Don't apologise for your long comment, it was great to read it and said all the things I think myself.

No, I'm not in anything artsy. I work in an office....photocopying and filing and boring stuff like that.

I wish it was an inbetween job, but I think I'm going to be stuck there for a while. Still, I should be grateful, at least I've GOT a job, there aren't many around these days.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas.

Well right that bit sounded a bit like the arrogant brat thing; like that job isn't as much worth like any other job ö.ö sorry but I just don't see you there I see you more like Anne Hathaway in The devil wears prada having that job (which pays bill=thumbs up) but one day there will t - h - e job come around the corner .

Luckily for me there is amazon and we make lists for christmas so I knew which books & dvds to order and now there is only a few stuff left to buy or craft .

Enjoy the upcoming holidays

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Buecherwurm [2011-12-11 21:53:10 +0000 UTC]

No, it didn't sound arrogant brat or anything. Not at all. I'm really not keen on my job at all, it's a bit crap and I WISH I could move on.

I've had lots of jobs, but nothing I've really liked. I do it for the money. My "life" is at home with my hobbies. If I could give up work and spend my life puttering away at painting, and making things I'd be as happy as Larry.

If I was born a hundred years ago, I think I might like to have been a watchmaker...or someone who paints plates or something...unfortunately all those slightly creative jobs don't exist in this country any more.

Hope you enjoy the holidays as well.

Buecherwurm In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2011-12-12 10:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Ok then it's fine. Well there still exist the career of a watchmaker...in Switzerland or so ^^° I think also in Germany )). You know that famous watchmaker who works with old techniques like enamelling ? They sell for like 100.000 Euros I don't know his name by heart but his work is amazing ö.ö
(and they are very pretty)

Well maybe you could work as a freelance illustrator but I think it's like connections connections connections ...

Maybe you could talk to some publishers I could see your work in some children books

Thanky you :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Buecherwurm [2011-12-12 20:38:13 +0000 UTC]

No, I've not heard of a famous watchmaker today who does enamelling. That sounds really interesting.

I'd LOVE to do illustrating work. I did send off examples of my stuff to a few publishing houses, but with no luck. As you say, a lot of it is connections. Things like having been to an art school and having made connections and saying you have graphic qualifications. I don't have any of that.

I'd love to do a children's book, but I'm no good at writing, so I need someone else to write it.

I looked it up, the company is called Patek Philipe (it is in Switzerland) [link]
Unfortunately I couldn't find the watches which were printed in the magazine (cause they are colorful but to kitschy and the one I googled looked a bit kitschy ^^°), but those look like real artworks :

[link]

They do the traditional work, so I understand why it is so expansive they are beautiful .

Well it's not like I can give you a qualified advice but I learnt this til now; I worked as an intern in a photo studio in munich, which was pretty popular with the magazines...this way you got to know a lot of important people like editors or so. Mostly those internships are not paid but you get to know the inside folks and you can give them your cards (well I didn't cause right now I have nothing to sell ^^°). If you are friendly they remember you the next time they'll see you. Also your employee can help you with geting in touch with people.

I once wrote an email to an illustrator I really admire and she answered me right away she told me, do what you love and try to find a mentor.

Wish the best for you .

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Buecherwurm [2011-12-12 22:07:11 +0000 UTC]

I've heard of Patek Philipe watches, but I didn't know they did nice ornamental enamelling though.

Oh...I followed that link, and those skeleton watches are SO LOVELY. They're so Steampunk! I want one.

I'm a bit stuck, job-wise, as it's just me and my son. And I need to be in a job that pays okay in order to pay all the bills. So I can't afford to go somewhere where perhaps the pay is less, but the chances are better.

I'm also very, VERY shy, and I'm not someone people tend to like. So I would be no good at being friendly and making contacts.

Ah well, no-one liked Michelangelo or Van Gogh either.

No, I'm not rude or anything, but I'm not good at talking to people, so I just seem very nerdy and quiet. Oh well...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Buecherwurm In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2011-12-13 00:21:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes they are, they are really great Cause I couldn't find the colorful ones I wanted to show I'm scanning the article (hopefully nobody will sue me XD) I will put it in my galery so you can watch it (on the upper edge you see some of their textures for the...inner of the watch, hell I don't even know how you call that area in german unfortunately you can't see the whole thing but it's a little mixture )

Single Mum sounds pretty tough (my parents got divorced when I was pretty young ^^°). I'm taking some extra art classes so maybe I can change my subject from digital media production to design (on some universites you can specialise on illustration after the first two semesters ) ). Back to the point; there is a young mother ( I don't know if she's single or having a partner) but one way or another she seems to have a smaller child, so she needs to pay extra attention to him/her. She told me the only time she can draw in quiet is in that lesson, (she want to study art) and she was like, I don't care what my friends say, I want to do this at least I have to try I admire her (espcially because she is like a genious with the pencil...)

I'm a Merthur shipper so I think there is some nerdyness in me as well ( or a lot? My room is full of books (like fantasy and such stuff) and comics, mangas xD so ... well ... ^^)

Of course internet and all that but you seem friendly maybe people are daunted by your pics ? IDK I was very shy (I talk so much about myself forgive me =. when I was younger and I'm still but for some things I kind of shy my shyness into a corner of my head. There are people you would prefer to never see again but on the other hand there are a lot of folks who just are open, friendly and like to get to know you or to get along with you (e.g.for work). Just make eye contact when you greet them and smile, most times people like to take the lead and talk about themselves (like me XD ... no not really ... horror ^^°) and then it rolls .

Nobody liked Michelangelo? He was a rockstar XD van Gogh he had some (big) mental stress that is always a bit complicated ^^°.

Again a loooooong comment, hope you're fine with it (please ^^°?)

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Buecherwurm [2011-12-14 21:12:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for scanning that in, I've commented at your DA on that.

In English that part of a watch/clock is the Face.

Ah, I'm not a young single Mum any more, my son has recently started work, but he doesn't earn much. So I am still the one with the main job and the one who pays all the bills. (I've been on my own since he was seven...so I've never had enough money to do anything really except take what job I can get to pay our bills.)

I hope you get to do what course you want. I really hope it leads to a job that you love. You spend so much of your lifetime in a job, it is great if you can get one that you actually enjoy.

I try to be friendly, but I don't seem to have much to say. And people I meet in real life are never into fandom or fanfic or art or Merlin or anything like that, (probably because I'm a bit older ) SO you can't start talking about that without seeming VERY weird.

With Michelangelo, people LOVED his art, but he was quite ugly and rude and not easy to get along with, so he wasn't very popular as a person.

(Leonardo, on the other hand, was meant to be absolutely charming and witty and everyone LOVED him as a person as well as an artist) (I think one of the Medici's called him "The most beautiful man alive" when he was young.)

Oh, yes, I loved your long comment, it was great to talk to you. (Hope you don't mind my long comment back.)

ObsidianSerpent In reply to Tonightlove [2011-11-06 19:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, I suppose the chain must be enchanted and able to stop magic, otherwise Merlin could have freed himself.

It could be bandits who've got hold of a magical chain...or perhaps a king from another kingdom has found out that Merlin is magic and has sent his knights out to capture him and bring him back... It can have whatever backstory you'd like really.
