From what we know so far, she claims her cause is to spread harmony by making all ponies equal and removing uniqueness. Yet she's clearly in a dominant position over the town, displaying blatantly obvious signs of using mind control on the populace.
She's not a revolutionary or a heroine she saw herself as; probably just a sad, frustrated control freak, a pony who couldn't stand the thought of ponies being better or more unique than she is, and responds by dragging ponies down to her level, and into THINKING like her.

The Equalists of Legend of Korra are essentially Nazis disguised as Communists. Glimmer is more Communist with her lack of overt genocidal thinking.

she has the most soft plushy consentration camp of all time in her town. and lets look at the futer? griffions changelings sea ponys? there not ponys there for they cant be equial. it could have gontten really messy if she really did have a booming town.Β
also nazis disgused as communists.....funny thing is that nazies HATE communism. a lot more than democrocy.

Strangely, this reminds me of one of the old Ultima games. I think it was the fifth or sixth one where you introduce a new philosophy into the world and then the next its turn into state mandated religion run by a mad man who truly believed he was doing it for the greater good.

Am I the only one who thinks this whole thing has some heavy "Communism Is Bad" undertones to it? I'm pretty sure that's not their intention and I myself am not a supporter of communism, but the similarities to a communist government, at least in the most basic principles, is somewhat uncanny.

I think she's more of a shout-out to the 'Equalists' from "Legend of Korra" and a general denunciation to the idea of conformity and the 'Tall Poppy Syndrome', but I wouldn't be surprised if the show-runners throw in anti-communism theme; this is an AMERICAN cartoon, after all...
She obvious intents to do what she did to the village with the rest of the country, like Amon and Lenin; "When the rest of Equestria sees that a princess gave up her cutie mark to join us, they'll finally understand what we're trying to accomplish."Β
Except of course, she probably couldn't; even assuming she manage to subvert Twilight and her friends, it doesn't take an idiot to suspect foul play is involved; I mean, it's just so blatantly obvious when you look at the village, with all its uncannily happy ponies. Plus, the idea of being stripped of their Marks and unique talents would probably be too disturbing to contemplate for the normal ponies.
And the Equestrian society is simply too stable, prosperous and peaceful an environment to breed socioeconomic conditions that might led to ponies being enticed by Starlight's ideas, unlike in Tsarist Russia, Depression Era Weimar Germany, or Republic city in the Korraverse. Extreme ideals like hers requires extreme social conditions in order to truly fester.
She probably don't have a realistic chance at succeeding from the start.Β
