The Shaardu Arka (speaker's note: Goa'uld = armored crab, land crab species, the size of a terrestrial rhinoceros, from the FJN world Thenus), a variant of the Al'kesh-class interstellar medium-range bomber, was developed for atmospheric missions.
The conceptual basis for the development of the Shaardu Arka was to free the Al'kesh-class medium-range interstellar bombers from purely planetary missions. This measure included the deliberate abandonment of the hyperdrive and associated subcomponents such as hyperspace navigation systems.
This has allowed the size of the craft to be reduced so that it is only fifty percent of the dimensions of an Al'kesh. It is important to emphasize that this reduction in size has no effect on the Shaardu Arka's shield systems, nor on its transport capability, albeit limited, which still meets the standards of the Al'kesh. In addition, the structural integrity of the Shaardu Arka's armor, compared to its Al'kesh predecessor, has been improved.
The Shaardu Arka is primarily used for tactical precision bombardment, heavy close air support missions, forward air surveillance missions, and discrete transport of special operations forces on the scale of a Mekashada.
The Shaardu Arka features a fixed Empal'tel Na'kekell dual-staff turret, with a calibre of 420 mm, which is also the primary weapon system of the Al'kesh. This turret configuration is capable of firing plasma bolts for surgical strikes against light to medium armored targets, or dropping plasma charges, also known as plasma bombs, for area-wide bombardments.
Equipped with strong armor and shield systems, the Shaardu Arka is not only predestined for the flight maneuvers required for standard bombardments, but also excels at attacks in hover mode. This feature facilitates targeting accuracy, as the Shaardu Arka can constantly align itself with the intended target during firing.
Since the JNA's arsenal does not have a dedicated system for high-angle firing, hover mode is an alternative for indirect enemy fire. In hover mode, the Shaardu Arka carefully controls its altitude and uses its gravimetric propulsion to reach altitudes on short notice suitable for engaging targets that normally require an indirect fire trajectory. If necessary, to descend as quickly as possible after firing on the enemy to an altitude where it is protected from enemy fire by natural cover or its position.
In addition to its combat-oriented role, the Shaardu Arka serves as a transport for small contingents of troops, ideal for special covert missions. The ship's capacity is a maximum of one mekashada (speaker's note: comprising fifty warriors, which, in the context of the JNA organization, is roughly equivalent to an IUSP platoon). Equally noteworthy is the ship's usefulness in supporting front-line units in active combat conditions thanks to its superior armor.
The crew of a Shaardu Arka consists of a crew of six: a pilot, a copilot, a weapons officer, a sensor/communications officer with optional flight controller training, a flight engineer who can additionally act as an EW/ECM officer, and a cargo officer who also assumes the role of second flight engineer.
