Description It's just a proof, but it's my favourite thing from that damn printmaking class. Combination of a Fra Angelico Annunciation fresco, van Gogh's The Starry Night, and self portrait.

I know it doesn't look that impressive, but keep in mind this was carved into a piece of copper with a knife. It's harder than it looks

I love Starry Night. I recall having to do a similar 'exploration' of a piece by a artist who showed at Arthur Stieglitz' 291 gallery in the early days. I chose Marsden Hartley's Seagulls. I thought I knew everything about the painting until I finished the first sketch. By the end of the assignment (which included writing as well) I still didn't know everything about the painting (how can you?) but I saw much of the complexity in it.

Anyhow, I'm impressed with your riffs on Van Gogh. There's a gentleness/ sweetness about them. As for etching, which is really hard, my only attempt at it many many years ago didn't turn out too horribly... but yours is quite good. I like the upward sloping horizon line and walking angel, with a halo that could be part of the swirling sky. She hasn't given her message yet, but has a finger raised to her lips in the universal gesture of hush. The annunciation was a sort of biblical version of the modern ultrasound, giving Mary the name and gender of her baby (conceived not in the usual way). But in your picture I suspect you are just playing around with Gothic and Post-Impressionist styles to create something new.

I decided I was going to appropriate The Starry Night in all of my classes. Someday I really need to read Vincent's letters to Theo. The assignment you talk about sounds really difficult. I don't know how anyone could fully understand a painting. The only thing you see is the finished product. You can't always tell the inspiration and process behind it.

Etching is hard. I really don't know why I chose to do this image as a dry point. I regretted that decision when I realized the amount of black that was going to be in it But it was an interesting experience. The printmaking class in general was interesting. I learned how to do so much stuff...even if I hope never to do any of it again!

Going as close to the source as possible is always best. The movie based on the brother's relationship (I think it was called something like Vincent and Theo, maybe made in the 90s?) is quite good.

You end up knowing less and more. Less because you can't know what was in the artist's head at the time he was painting and more because you bring your own stuff to the work. Drawing, painting, writing are excellent ways to break down a composition, because of the state of concertration required to do these things is active rather than passive. Wittgenstein said (to paraphrase) using one art form to study another leads to a deeper understanding.

I was lucky enough to have a fantastic art teacher (for two years in high school), who was a printmaker outside the classroom. We did silk screening, lino and drypoint(of course). Printing was cool, because it forces you to think about negative space and contrast, and you have to create the plate, screen, etc., backwards, which has to be good for the brain cells. Anyway, after high school, I never did any printing again... as such. I did layout art for printing when I was a graphic artist, but the fancy cameras and presses distanced me from the actual printing part. But the things my art teacher passed on about printing stuck with me and they're somewhat relevant now that I'm doing digital art. I'm glad you persevered with this project and you never know when experiences with stuff you hope you never have to do again can come in handy.

Not when you're trying to carve it into a piece of copper...Although I really love this proof. It almost makes the 14 hours of carving worth it.

The hardest art thing I ever did was a stamp and I ended up cutting myself making that. <__<

Haha. It was for school! If I didn't have to do it, I dunno if I would've finished it. And you know the worst thing? This is the only thing I made in that class that can't be printed infinitely. Every time you print this, the copper gets squished and eventually the lines become too shallow to print. The things I like are always so impossible :c

Yeah I figured it was for school. I can't think of many things i'd willingly work on for 14 HOURS. @__@
Painting and a stamp, that's as far as I went in my art class in middle school.

It was even longer than 14 hours Every print took about half an hour to ink/wipe, plus the time it took to prepare the paper...and clean up D: Don't you remember me bitching to you about that class like all the time? THAT IS WHY.

Yeah. I thought I needed that class for my degree. I figured out I didn't need it in like...October. By then it was too late to drop out

Maybe. Next semester might be hard. Although...I'm taking two art history classes. Last semester I wrote both essays the nights they were due, crammed the night before each exam, and ended up with an A So yeah, really I only have 4 nights of intense work for each of those classes! I think I've mastered the art of procrastination.
