Going as close to the source as possible is always best. The movie based on the brother's relationship (I think it was called something like Vincent and Theo, maybe made in the 90s?) is quite good.
You end up knowing less and more. Less because you can't know what was in the artist's head at the time he was painting and more because you bring your own stuff to the work. Drawing, painting, writing are excellent ways to break down a composition, because of the state of concertration required to do these things is active rather than passive. Wittgenstein said (to paraphrase) using one art form to study another leads to a deeper understanding.
I was lucky enough to have a fantastic art teacher (for two years in high school), who was a printmaker outside the classroom. We did silk screening, lino and drypoint(of course). Printing was cool, because it forces you to think about negative space and contrast, and you have to create the plate, screen, etc., backwards, which has to be good for the brain cells. Anyway, after high school, I never did any printing again... as such. I did layout art for printing when I was a graphic artist, but the fancy cameras and presses distanced me from the actual printing part. But the things my art teacher passed on about printing stuck with me and they're somewhat relevant now that I'm doing digital art. I'm glad you persevered with this project and you never know when experiences with stuff you hope you never have to do again can come in handy.

The hardest art thing I ever did was a stamp and I ended up cutting myself making that. <__<

Haha. It was for school! If I didn't have to do it, I dunno if I would've finished it. And you know the worst thing? This is the only thing I made in that class that can't be printed infinitely. Every time you print this, the copper gets squished and eventually the lines become too shallow to print. The things I like are always so impossible :c

Yeah I figured it was for school. I can't think of many things i'd willingly work on for 14 HOURS. @__@
Painting and a stamp, that's as far as I went in my art class in middle school.

Haha. My New Year's resolution was going to be stop procrastinating. But seeing as I fail at my resolutions anyways, there was really no point ;D

I do know. I tried being an optimist a few years back. It didn't go so well.
