Description Soviet flying boat Beriev MBR-2, with M-34 engine. On Skis.

Sadly I have literally no information on the ski variants. I know that the 72th Regiment of the Baltic Air Fleet had some, and that at least one was captured by Finnish forces. Apparently the skis were detachable and could be mounted to all aircraft of this type. Note that the wing floats are detached.

This was the last time I drew an aircraft in all white winter camo. Didn't work very well for the La-5 and didn't work that well here.

Update 18.8: Made the sky, wing unserside and weathering a little darker and smoother, and refined the editing.

Favourite and indeed Watch for the good mono pencil work.

I don't know a deal more than you about the ski variant but the main ski mounts look like they'd be picking up on the beaching gear attachments. Having said that, I don't know if they could land on their beaching gear, but there is period footage of the Supermarine Walrus flying boat taking off from a grass field on its beaching gear and then jettisoning same. (can't remember how far in, but in "The Sea Shall Not Have Them")

Thanks for the watch and the Favs!

The Skis were actually mounted directly to the aircraft, so it was very well able take off and land with them. In fact this was their purpose, as many lakes, rivers and sometimes even the sea freeze in the russian winter. They seem to be spring suspended too, and the wires on the front and rear of the skis are there to get them in a level position in flight to minimize drag. The beaching gear for the MBR-2 actually consisted of two sleds with wooden wheels, one was placed under the fuselage below the wings and one beneath the tail. No idea if they could take off with this too.

However the soviets also experimented with jettionable skis that were used for takeoff, but only with fighters. In the book "Yakovlev Fighters of WW2" they're called "Bedroom Slippers."

You're very welcome. And thanks for the extra info on the Beriev. They tend to get a bit ignored in favour of fighters (and UK and US types) in the UK specialist press.

I think you are being too hard on yourself.

The winter camo looks good to me.

It's not the camo itself that bothers me, but that it's really hard to get contrast in a drawing if the aircraft, the ground and the background are in the same color or generally the same tone. This is also why I haven't done a night scene yet. For some reason I believe that there's not enough contrast in the drawing, and to me contrast is what gives a pencil drawing the realistic look.

probably I'm just focusing waaay too much on this.

I can appreciate that it must be difficult but I think you have balanced the light well.
You will always be your hardest critic
