An image depicting a scene in South America, in what will become the Ituzaingó Formation in Argentina, 9 million years ago in the late Miocene. A female Thylacosmilus atrox has killed an Adinotherium paranese and has slurped out the internal organs as food. A Macroeuphractus retusus, a 1.5 meter long carnivorous armadillo,is now chasing it away so it can eat the rest. But that’s okay with her since she only eats the guts anyway. The rest of it is too hard for her, she isn’t very specialised in gut-sucking.

This drawing was much inspired by this journal section www.deviantart.com/inmyarmsinm… from www.deviantart.com/inmyarmsinm…. It is meant to depict the last scene in the hunt. As you should have heard by now since it is getting so much attention, recent studies suggest Thylacosmilus was ill-adapted to eating meat, and probably only sucked the organs out of its food. It also suggests Thylacosmilus may have had a horny sheath on its head, something that seems much ignored. I have interpreted that as something like the head armour on an armadillo. If you are giggling just because I called the sheath ‘horny’ you are even less mature than that Scipionyx specimen when it died.
