Description Growing tired with anticipation, eventually drifting off into my own space...

This exposure was approximately 2.5 hours long, about half an hour longer than I was planning. I ended up falling asleep in a chair, resulting in my camera going dead, but I was still able to get a fairly decent exposure. This was taken from my backyard. Curves and levels editing done in photoshop, and some saturation adjustments too.

To KROHN27:I made my own remote look it up on instructables.com. type canon remote in the search field at the top of the page, there real easy to make

Worth the wait i'd say. An interesting and conceptual shot.

It's a great way of realising how the lighting really does change around you. Using the physical world to give you beauty.

Very nice

Great shot! I'm wondering if there was an issue with the image being over-exposed before working it in PS? Maybe I'm just unable to find a dark enough location to achieve the right exposure.

nice work. especially with using digital. im impressed with the lack of amp burn. if the camera went dead, as you say, how did it manage to save the image? ive always wondered how long a full D80's battery would last me on a long exposure. obviously keeping the ISO to a minimum would extend it to a large degree.

thank you! i'm not too sure how the image saved, but the shutter was set to bulb and when i went out and shut it off, i didn't hear the shutter close and the camera was off. i'm just glad it turned out

thank you, i really wanna try this again now that i have a remote shutter release for my newer camera

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hector42 In reply to omagnas [2007-01-03 02:07:44 +0000 UTC]

How did you do that without it? Exposure mode "T" (or is it called "X"?? ...whatever...a mode where you press and release the trigger once to begin the exposure und do the same to end it)?

omagnas In reply to Hector42 [2007-01-03 02:17:15 +0000 UTC]

i used my older camera (canon digital rebel) which i have a remote shutter release for, unfortunately it doesn't work with my 30D. then when using it, you set the shutter speed to 'bulb' which allows you to keep the shutter open for as long as you like.

Hector42 In reply to omagnas [2007-01-03 03:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, on older cameras like the Nikon FE this setting is called "B" ... however this other shutter speed setting is useful too, you don't need the remote shutter release with that...but obviously not all cams feature that. :/

omagnas In reply to Hector42 [2007-01-03 15:07:25 +0000 UTC]

ah i see. i've only got into photography over the past 2 years, so as of now i'm really only familiar with my cameras. but the remote does help for keeping the cam steady which is a big help. how does that setting work without the remote?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hector42 In reply to omagnas [2007-01-03 17:36:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes...there is an advantage and a disadvantage about that remote release. The advantage is, that it's a little bit more steady, the disadvantage is that if you have a looong remote release, the wind pulls at it, making it eventually less steady because it starts to swing.
The other setting starts the exopsure when you push the trigger and ends it when you push it again. However, you have to touch the cam at least to end the exposure (the beginnig can be triggered by time mechanics (or electronics )).

Looks like I'm not familiar with other cameras too *lol*. I assumed that every newer cam had that feature.

How did you get the stars to look like there on an angle?

omagnas In reply to spinklefinkle [2006-12-04 01:18:29 +0000 UTC]

thank you. i think either my tripod was on a slight angle, or it could be from the lens which can distort things, because of it's really wide-angle. i'll go check out your photos right now!

spinklefinkle In reply to omagnas [2006-12-04 02:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Great job

no problem man, i could hardly frame the shot cos of the darkness but i think the 10mm lens warped the sky a bit. thanks again, and good luck on your attempts!

KROHN27 [2006-12-03 05:25:01 +0000 UTC]

I have a Rebel as well, but how did you get the shutter to 2.5 hrs? did you put it on bulb and hold it that long lol?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

omagnas In reply to KROHN27 [2006-12-03 12:54:07 +0000 UTC]

yes, you set it to bulb, but you need a remote shutter release which acts as your shutter button. it plugs into the side of the camera and is basically a shutter button on a cord, but it can lock open, allowing you to keep the shutter open as long as you like. thanks for taking a look!

i would imagine so, they're really handy even for infrared shots and other long exposures where you don't want any camera shake.
