They weren't expecting the Wretched to come up on them so suddenly. When Frozen tried to rescue Hiroko, who had been grabbed by the monster, his spear was broken and he was knocked away forcefully. Ori rushed forward to stand guard in front of Frozen, aiming at the beast.
He had to protect Frozen and get Hiroko out.
