Scuff chibi!

Seriously, I have no friggin' clue what I'm doing. Crit the shit out of this and give me tool names, procedures, whatever it takes to make the next piece better. Oh, this is GIMP, by the way, so uh...don't use lingo that doesn't translate well to GIMP if you're an Adobe user or something.
WHAT I DID
I took a pencil lineart from like...three years ago and scanned it in, then used the pen tool to ink it over. I then colored, layering as needed, and used the free select thingy and smudge tool for details. That's it.
Scuff is a Megaman X fan character, a low-powered utility robot who works in the scrap yard and moonlights as a thief and courier of illegal gains. :3 He gets his name from his generally poor condition - all scuffed up.

Mmm, digital.
The lineart looks the best on his hair - the variation of thickness, I mean. And I like the hair shine too, it took me bleeding ages to figures out how to do that when I first started digital colouring. >_<
So, it's a good start! He looks so cute. ^ ^

I very much like the name (Scuff is full of character). It's probably one of the large rodents than existed prior to the fall of the dinosaurs. Those rats were quite a bit bigger back then.

Oh my gosh he's so FULL OF CUTE! *^_^* I wanna pick him up and drop him in a tub and scrub him clean with LOTS OF BUBBLES and then dry him with a BIG FLUFFY TOWEL and then snuggle the bejeebers out of him!

I don't know how to work GIMP at all, I have it but it just confuses the heck out of me x0
Though you've done a great job and I like it alot
(I do use a program called nekopaint, it's great for lineart, but other than that it's photoshop for me)

Looks to me like you picked up the digital medium pretty quickly. I can't really criticize your use of the program, since I don't know GIMP at all.
I like it. He's cool. I'd hire him.

I really don't see anything wrong with it. You did a great job with detials and the lighting and shading looks good as well. All in all I'd say it looks great! You did very well for you frist try! (much better then I did on my frist try. ^_^; )

The linework is time-consuming and I think I spend more time on free-selecting than actually coloring.

I did what you did. I have some experience from adobe so It was like no sweat for me. This is freakin awesome, no shit.
Here's a tip. Search youtube for tutorials (for gimp). Thats what I did while I was using photoshop. Some of them are really helpful and can teach you to cut, crop, background, color, ink, etc.
Seriously, this is good. I can't see what else you got cooked up. (I really can't wait)

I wish I could offer critique, since you asked so nicely, but I've never used GIMP so I have no idea what kind of tools you have at your disposal.

Not knowing the first damned thing about digital coloring, I'm afraid I can't help much with your process...
That said, you seem to be off to a very good start. Good layering, smooth colors, and nice linework. Also, cute as all get-out subject. :3

How does inking work with GIMP, anyway? I just played with the Brightness/Contrast thing it has to make my lines look dark.

Well, you can freehand ink with a tablet or, what I did is use the ink tool. You just click from point A to point B and any points in between that you need, then pull and push on the lines with th cursor until they're in place, and push "stroke" and it makes a brushlike ink stroke. It's pretty cool, except sometimes it freaks out and makes little spikes everywhere and I have no idea why. O_o

Hm, I just tested the ink tool, and it just lets me draw black lines, and that's it...
