Description
Your eyes searched frantically for them. You were five minutes late and even though you apologized to them through text, you couldn’t let them wait for you any longer. You stretched your neck and stood at your tippy toes to get a better look at the people. The amusement park was jam-packed today, making it hard to search for them.
Then you saw him. Makoto was staring intently at his phone and then he looked around as if searching for someone too. You ran towards him, bumping with some people along the way, muttering a “sorry” to everyone of them. Just then, Makoto noticed you and gave you a smile, waving his hand a little. When you reached him, you put a hand to your chest and let out a heavy breath. All that bumping and running made you tired. After you regained your breathing, you looked up to see Makoto still smiling at you.
“Where is everybody?”
You both asked at the same time. The confusion was spread on both your features.
“Gou said that all of you were here already...” you said as you recalled what the burgundy-haired girl told you a few moments ago.
“That’s not what she texted me.” Makoto showed you his phone.
We’ll be a little late. I’m with [Name] and the others. Just wait there ^^
You stared dumbfounded at Gou’s text message to Makoto. You reached for your own phone and dialled Gou’s number. Cannot be reached, straight to voice mail. Nagisa’s, voice mail. Rei’s, voice mail. Haru’s, voice mail.
“What is going on here?” you muttered as you tried to call them again one by one. Could it possibly...
“Were we set-up?”
As soon as you heard Makoto’s question, you stiffened. You inwardly cursed Gou. Telling her that you like Makoto was a mistake. Of course, this was a set-up.
“Seems like it,” you answered as calmly as possible,”do you want to go home?”
“Do you want to?” Makoto’s smile faltered. “I would like to stay since we’re here already but if you want to go home, it’s fine. I’ll just---“
“No no no. It’s totally fine with me, too.” You stopped his rambling. “Let’s enjoy this day and make them regret that they’re not here.”
When you said that, Makoto’s smile returned. “So where should we go first?”
The both of you walked aimlessly at the park. The place was too crowded and the lines on the attractions were just too long except for one. Makoto read the sign “Night of Terror” and he smiled awkwardly at you. “Are you sure you want to get in there, [Name]? There are lots of others to choose from...”
“But the lines are too long.” You whined. “If you don’t want to we can find...”
“No, it’s okay.” An awkward laugh.
“Are you sure?” You asked in which he answered with a nod.
You stretched out your hand and jokingly said, “Here you can hold my hand if you’re scared.”
He grasped your hand and muttered a “thank you”. You didn’t expect him to actually hold your hand. The warmth he was giving spread through you, gathering to your face, your heartbeat racing. You were too surprised that you were only snapped away from your thoughts when the park attendant asked if you were going in.
Makoto swallowed hard, beads of cold sweat formed in his temple as you two walked further inside. The place was too dark for his liking, the red lights not giving him comfort. Only the feel of your hand and the sound of your breathing calmed him down.
You lost count of the number of apologies he had given you. For every time a “ghost” appears, he would squeeze your hand tightly and he was worried that he might’ve hurt you. You would reassure him every time that he wasn’t. When you reached the exit, Makoto released your hand and you immediately felt a sense of longing. But it didn’t took long because he held your hand again, his cheeks stained pink. A look of bewilderment crossed your face and upon noticing it Makoto quickly explained, “It would be better to hold your hand, right? So we won’t lose each other...”
Won’t lose each other? “Makoto... I...”
“...since there are a lot of people here, it would be hard if we get separated.” Makoto finished, his finger scratching his cheek.
You almost confessed. You wanted to slam your face on the wall and disappear. “Ahaha... right...”
After sometime, you were able to find an empty bench. You immediately plopped down, your feet a little sore from all the walking. Makoto, on the other hand, seem okay. He released your hand and stood up. “Wait here for a moment, [Name].”
“Where are you going?”
He turned his gaze away from you and you followed his eyes to a beeline leading to an ice-cream stall. Realizing that he’s planning to buy the ice cream alone, you began to stand up. “I’ll go with you.”
“No” Makoto gently pushed you down, “your feet probably hurts. I’ll buy for the two us.”
How in the world will you be able to say no to that face? When you sighed in defeat, he smiled and patted your head. You watched him until he was no longer on sight, the mass of people blocking your view.
Your cellphone rang. Gou-chan.
“Where are you Gou?! I swear I’ll kill you when ---“
“Relax, [Name]-chan! Why are you so upset with me?” Gou’s voice feigned hurt.
“Whatever, Gou.”
“Did Mako-chan already asked [Name]-chan out?” you heard Nagisa’s chirpy voice.
“Sorry for the wait.”
You looked up and see that Makoto had already returned. Two ice cream cones were in his hand, vanilla and [favourite flavour]. You didn’t remember telling him what your favourite flavour was. You quickly pocketed your phone and took one of the ice creams from his hand.
“It’s dripping.”
Your eyes were trained to the scene in front of you, Makoto licking the ice cream off his hand and fingers. And as if you were in some sort of trance, you didn’t notice that Makoto was eyeing the melting ice cream on your hand as well. The moment you felt his warm tongue on your fingers, you shuddered and blushed a million shades of red. “M...Mako?”
Acting like what he did was completely normal, Makoto gave you a smile. “[Favourite flavour] tastes good.”
You nodded and concentrated on eating your ice cream. Maybe ice cream will calm your heart.
“This feels like a date. Doesn’t it, [Name]?” Makoto stated all of a sudden.
“A... what?!” You stared dumbfounded at him. Does he know?
He let out a soft chuckle at your reaction but a blush was on his face. “I promise to treat you to a better date next time we go out.”
You could only stare at him, remembering what Nagisa asked. “Did Mako-chan already asked [Name]-chan out?” Your heart hammered at your chest and your mind was going black. Is it possible that he...
When you didn’t answer, Makoto quickly added, “If it’s okay with you, of course.”
“I... I would love to, Mako.” Your heart fluttered as the happiness inside you swirled.
He gave you a quick peck on the forehead, smiling gently at you. He took your hand and intertwined his fingers to yours.
So as to not lose each other...
