“How’re the ribs?” Laura asked as the moved to the cage
The question itself almost seemed ominous. Was it idle banter to break the ice? Was it a genuine concern for Allison’s well being? Was it probing for a physical weak spot? Was it something else altogether?
Allison answered a question with a question.
“Why do you ask? Looking for an advantage?”
“Not really, just looking for your threshold. Putting the boss on the shelf again would be a bad look for me. Especially after hours.”
Now there was some building tension.
“Doc gave me a clean bill of health. The only way to truly test it is to give it a whirl. Lets find out if you can put me on the shelf.” Allison almost answered that too eagerly. They both knew Laura could, but only Laura knew if she WOULD.
Laura smiled a little, which sort of broke the ice believe it or not.
“I promise not to… but I wouldn’t recommend you letting me get you cornered against the cage.”
“Ha… that’s a deal.”
Tension dropped some.
They each put their guard up, Laura looked just a bit more comfortable.
They circled a bit, but Allison wasn’t ready to engage just yet.
“I couldn’t help but notice you didn’t sign up for the gym championship. We both know you were good enough to win it. Not one person you cant beat in any facet they come after you. How come?”
“I could ask you the same thing?” Laura said, circling to her left mirroring Allison’s circling. Neither had thrown a punch yet.
“Touché.” Allison said, but then went on. “Tell you what I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
“Ok….” Laura started, tossing a left hand out, no real intent other than to see if Allison was really ready. Allison swatted it aside with ease.
“But first tell me what the hell has gotten into you? You nearly left me hanging against Katie’s team! I deserve an answer.” With that Allison threw the first real punch of the fight. A hard, stinging left jab that Laura barely got out of the way of, sliding her head left and her right hand up. It didn’t miss by much.
Laura’s gaze hardened. Allison was serious now and ‘serious’ Allison should not be taken lightly.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Im still playing with the lightset for this corner of the room with the cage. I know this isnt great and may never be fantastic, but I did want to point out that it's not up to snuff yet. I'll be playing with it throughout but posting just the same to keep the story moving.
