Description
This sprite style was inspired by visual novel games like 999 and phoenix wright, where it isn't purely pixel art.

Please feel free to ask any questions!
I'll be attaching the link to the video of the process as soon as it's done uploading. :3
edit: here it is [link]

for the timing of the frames, I had something like:

half (100ms)
closed (100ms)
half (100ms)
open (3000ms)
half (100ms)
closed (100ms)
half (100ms)
open (100ms)
half (100ms)
closed (100ms)
half (100ms)
open (1000ms)

so it results in:
a pause, 2 blinks, a longer pause, 1 blink (repeat)

Optimize for GIF reduces the file size a lot!! <3
Also, making each frame (90ms) instead of (100ms) allows you to have 12 frames per sec, which is pretty darn smooth compared to 10 fps. ^^

Ah..This was perfect! Exactly what I needed a bit, to get me started on my first ever try with sprites. ;-; I thought it was very helpful how you did it all in steps, and your character is lovely. The wings seemed a tiny bit off, but that blinking icon is still so pretty. o-o I hope to learn to shade that clean soon.

How exactly do you fill lineart with the bucket tool in SAI?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

onisuu In reply to NotedDreams [2013-06-11 21:11:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh I don't use the bucket tool. Instead I use the select tool and fill with the shortcut ctrl+f

this is soo helpful thank you very much.
but i have a question~

how do you lock transparency on the lineart?
i use paint tool sai and after i finish the picture i can't figure out how to lock the lines.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

onisuu In reply to FancySmancy-adopts [2013-02-10 22:37:43 +0000 UTC]

to lock the lines, there is a checkmark box above the layers box "preserve opacity"
tick that and your layer's transparency will be locked

if you want the whole image to have a transparent bg, go to file > export as > .png and choose the option with opacity. ^^

When I press playback I can still see the open eyes when it's on the closed eye step. It's like the new layer just shows over the previous one. Also when I play it, it doesn't have eyes. e-e Could someone tell me what's wrong?

I like to use 90ms instead of 100ms, it makes it 0.09 seconds, which is roughly 12 frames per second, which is slightly smoother than 100ms, which is 10 fps.
