Edit: I added some color to the sketches. They look better with color.Several quick sketches I did of Sam for the heck of things because I didn't feel like doing actual homework.
Figuring out how his body fits together is a bit of a challenge. I prefer fish-tailed merfolk who swim by moving their tails laterally, side-to-side, not up and down a la Disney style. So far, I think he looks pretty good.

Hm. I guess I didn't expect his hair to be so adorably curly! And maybe a little shorter, like at his chin
