Description Costume Design Concept for "Il Doctore Peste", or, the Plague Doctor archetype from the Commedia Del'Arte.

Originally the Plague Doctor evolved from the elaborate masks worn by physicians during the Black Plague, who would use a rod to poke at the swollen lymph nodes that show up on victims.

The long beak was often packed with flowers and herbs, which were thought to protect against the sickness which travelled in "foul air". Clearly, it was the fleas off of the millions of rats that were doing the deed, but I'm sure that it helped a little against the stench of death everywhere.

Effectively, it was the first gas mask.

This guy is a mishmash of periods designed for a "decayed gentleman" look, rather than period accuracy.

Sì medico, che è malato, ma non nel modo in cui si potrebbe pensare ... che è malato per mancanza di sanità mentale!

I knew I should have bought one of those masks when I was in Venice, very mysterious. Excellent work.

~Also, Didn't they have ruby lenses in the eye-holes? I think in might have heard that somewhere.

Some did, sure. All for the supposed benefit of warding off the plague with "science". Eh, at any rate, when I wear this one, I usually wear goggles.

Thanks!

Wow that mask is creepy. I swear I've seen something similar on a creepy thread from 4chan.

Well, the Plague Doctor has been around for centuries. He's bound to show up on the internets as well.

. . . And part of the first effective haz-mat suit! Combined with all the heavy leather and waxed robes of the traditional outfit, not one case is known of them getting the plague themselves. ^_^ Uber spiffy, btw.

That's right! I sort of picture this fabric as oilskin meets brocade.
Thanks!
