This is my entry for the contest, "A 'Familiar' Affair" being hosted by [link] and [link]

More information on the contest can be found here. [link]

I was first told about this contest by my sister and we have worked along side of each other to create our individual pieces, so you should take a look at hers as well. It can be found at [link]

Working on our entries together, was in its own way, an added element of self portraiture. We have always shared a strong bond that was in many ways started and glued together by working on and learning our art together. As we taught ourselves, we taught each other. We worked so closely together, that for a long time we could not separate which of our pieces were done by which one of us. With time, our own styles emerged. These pieces, were done to reflect both our similarities and our differences

As for the story within my individual piece, the elven girl is a loose self portrait. I drew myself as a gypsy because that best encapsulates my personality. I have always been a very free spirit who's home has always been the road. I have never lived any one place long enough that I would consider it where I am from. I have spent much of my life on the open road. I kept the coloring true to myself though obviously idealized my portrait quite a bit.

One of the things that you may notice is that there is not a single familiar in the picture. The story is that of a family tree. I consider the raven to be a family totem animal as we all consider the raven to be one of our totems. In the picture, the raven is guarding over the family tree which holds within its branches the fruits of individual totem animals. There is the horse for my older sister, the buffalo for my father, the mountain lion for my mother, and the wolf for my younger brother. The empty fruits represent those branches on my family tree that have influenced me indirectly. This is all a story or a timeline stretching back from my ancestry to the present, creating the history that has built upon itself to give birth to and influence who I am today. The largest bubble or fruit contains my own personal totem or familiar. It is no longer still attached to tree because it has taken a life of its own and spread its wings. It is aware of its history but not limited by it.

That brings me to my choice of my familiar, the feathered serpent. It was an easy choice as I have always felt a deep connection to the being. It is what comes to me in my dreams, guides me, and gives me a sense of being kindred to it. I have been that creature many times in my dreams.

The heavy symbolism and the colors reflect the world of my dreams.

This piece was inked first, then colored with prismacolor pencils on card stock.
