I was surprised by the silence, as it took a few seconds for the sound to reach us, but then...........it takes one's breath away. 7,000,000 horse power if I am not mistaken. Hoohah!

The experience at 3.5 mile away from pad 39A (that is where I am usually located at the NASA press site) is emotionaly moving. 7,000,000 horse power hurdling 3000 tons off the launch pad with a little over 8 minutes to earth orbit is dynamic to say the least.

We tried to catch the launch in May but it got bumped, but it was high on my list of things to do. I love the area as well as it is abundant with wildlife. If I am down there for another launch I would love to meet you and learn more about these wonderful machines. The numbers boggle the mind........500,000 gallons of liquid fuel, 300,000 gallons of water to cool the pad, 17,500 mph escape velocity, and it's just another day at work for our wonderfully courageous Astronauts.

Next launch is scheduled for October 5. That will be STS-125 The last Hubble repair mission. and then the last flight for 2008 will be on November 7, 2008 and that is STS-126 back to ISS. Definitly if you get down this way drop me an email and let me know your coming down. We'll head out to Black point wildlife refuge North of the space center. There are lots of wildlife opportunities to capture out there.

You are too kind. It may be difficult for me to get away, but I would like to contact you and see how you feel about meeting, when I can get away. I thank you for your generous hospitality.

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to kamikaze0zero [2008-06-25 10:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes sir, I work at Kennedy Space Center so I see all the shuttle launches and most all of the landings (When they're not diverted to Edwards AFB in California).

I was there, I was there... woot! What an incredible shot. You had better seats then me. I did video with my camera instead of pictures. My friend with me had a better camera and we're going to trade.
These are awesome shots of the to lift off. I wondered if there would be any on here. Thank you for sharing.

Great shot, man. So much power. I watched it live on NASA TV, jealous of you the whole time!

It's unfortunate that so many people take our space program for granted, or worse, don't feel we need it at all.
I recently re-watched "From the Earth to the Moon." and I felt cheated. Not that I was born in the wrong decade or anything like that, but that we didn't stay. We were there, we were just getting good at it, and they pulled the plug.
My generation doesn't have any amazing milestones to be proud of. We need the Constellation Program to go through. Otherwise, I'm afraid our space program will languish in the political mire for many, many years.

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to Atmosphotography [2008-06-02 01:15:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Tom. You have hit the nail on the head. The Apollo program is the reason I went to work at Kennedy Space Center. I started there in 1989 just before the 20th anniversary of Apollo 11. I was ten years old when Neil and Buzz stepped out on the Moon. I too look forward to the Constellation program to progress to fullfilment. Although I'll most likely be close to retirement age if not already retired by the time we hopefully see the continuation of men stepping on the Moon. With luck we WILL see a return to the Moon and then on to Mars, unfortunately, like Apollo and Shuttle, there will still be the political nonesense that we have experienced from the very beginning of the Space program.

your welcome is it hard to get good shots just after lift off or does it start slow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OpticaLLightspeed In reply to Flyboy008 [2008-06-01 19:01:52 +0000 UTC]

It's not to bad really. Yesterday, I had to deal with the humidity and haze in the air. The raw image did not look quite that good. Thank god for photoshop. The media photographers were having to deal with the same problems, so I don't feel so bad. To get back to answering your question, it's alot like shooting flying demos at an airshow only this is going up.

Well I was at the LC39 Press site on KSC. It's not the best image. I was working and took a minute fire off some quick grab-shots.
