Description This is my AU take on the U.S.S. Grissom, which appeared in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock".

In my story, the Grissom was on a recon mission to see how things were going for the Genesis planet, and when the ship arrived, they received a coded message from the planet's surface, which Lieutenant Saavak, a Vulcan officer, identified as a distress message from Mr. Spock, who was believed to be dead. After discussing the matter with the ship's captain, J.T Esteban, Saavak went down to the planet, along with Daniel Marcus, the leading science officer behind the Genesis project, and Captain Kirk's son, to see what they could find. The two eventually found Spock, who was still alive, but also appeared to have become younger.

Saavak contacted the Grissom, and requested that they bring Spock back to Starfleet. But Captain Esteban, who was a very over-cautious man, stated that standard Starfleet procedure states that nothing, be it an object or a living being, may be brought aboard a ship until the risk of contamination can be ruled out. After much persuasion, and getting to hear Spock's actual voice on the comm channel, Esteban agreed, but insisted that everything would be done "by the book".

But before Spock, Saavak, and Marcus could be beamed up to the Grissom, the Grissom got attacked by a Klingon Bird Of Prey, lead by Klingon Captain Kruge, who was out to prove that the Genesis project was in reality a weapon, developed by the Federation to destroy the Klingon race, which wasn't true. Kruge ordered his gunman to just harm the Grissom, but the gunman manages to get a "lucky shot" and completely destroys the Grissom, killing everyone onboard, and leaving Spock, Saavak and Marcus alone on the Genesis planet, to fend for themselves, while the planet proves to be unstable.

Ambassador Sarek, Spock’s father, mentions the destruction of the Grissom, later, when the Klingon representative Kamarag accuses the Federation for creating the Genesis project to destroy the Klingon race.

The Grissom is an Oberth class vessel, which is one of the smallest starship classes in Starfleet, with just 13 decks and capable of supporting a maximum crew of 80 persons. Even the Red Squad version of this class is relatively small, compared to other ships in Starfleet. And that's not really surprising, since the Oberth class was meant exclusively to study astronomical phenomenon, as well as perform data gathering mission about stars and planets. Because of its small size, as well as its purpose, the Oberth class was not as standard equipped with any torpedo launchers, only phaser banks. But the Red Squad versions of the Oberth class does feature one single torpedo launcher, and nothing more powerful than photon torpedoes. The Oberth class was also equipped with a special kind of shields that were strong enough to break through gravitational wavefronts, and this effect was enhanced by the fact that the ship's bulkheads were made of super sturdy victurium. Escape pods, capable of transporting 9 persons, were also a standard feature on the Oberth class, in case of an emergency. As for warp drive, the fastest Oberth class ship didn't reach speeds faster than warp factor 7.

For the parts for this ship, I used the following parts sheets. All parts originally made by captshade .

The basic body is made from captshade 's ortho of the U.S.S. Oberth. But I did minor modification, by adding TNG phaser banks to the ship, and custom changing the warp nacelles, to give them more of a TNG feel.

(I don't own Star Trek. Paramount Pictures and Viacom does. I'm just a fan.)

(Don't steal this. Please ask before using this, or any of my other starships. Thanks in advance for your understanding.)

the red part of the nacelle is called the bussard collector, to which this ship and all ships have in ST.
