Description Note: Images and Characters do not belong to me!

Well, if you're wondering what this is, well, as you all may know, I grew up on old Hanna Barbera cartoons on Cartoon Network back when I was born.  I grew up watching the old cartoons of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, and even the 90s when Hanna Barbera were testing out new Cartoon Network shows!  And I loved all of these characters to pieces, from Huckleberry Hound to Scooby Doo, from the Banana Splits (before they were transformed into shells of their former selves this year on Syfy) to The Jetsons, from Wacky Races to Dynomutt: Dog Wonder, and even their crossover movies were nothing to sneeze at.  Heck, the 90s had their fill too, before they became Cartoon Network studios, with shows like Dexter's Laboratory and the Powerpuff Girls.

And today, I figured why not show off my top 10 favorite characters of Hanna-Barbera and show how they have influenced my childhood... in a way.  And if you're curious on this meme created by and want to do it, here's the link: www.deviantart.com/edogg818180…

That said, let's count them down, starting from the bottom right, and going all the way around to the top left!

10. Top Cat (Everybody knows who this intellectual, con-cat is, because he's known to his friends by 'T.C.'.  This lovable, yet sneaky rogue of a cat lives on the streets of New York, but always finds a way to try to come out on top of everything, even if it blows up in his face on occasion.  This show was pretty much full of early 60s references that a lot of people may not get today, but back in the 60s, it was probably a very relevant show for its time... I mean, The Amazing World of Gumball will probably grow irrelevant in a few years when new technology comes along, but I'm sure people can't help but look back on the show with fondness.  That's how I feel about Top Cat.  An enjoyable experience about a group of rogue cats that try to find a way around things that were illegal, like gambling and using the police phone box... yeah, those were before cell phones were invented at the time.  However, Top Cat was still relevant in a lot of ways, as he had his own movie in the Superstar 10, was the leader of Yogi's Treasure Hunt, and in 2011 and 2015, he managed to get two movies... that were released in Mexico, but had an English dub.  As for the movies themselves, they were okay at best.  But still, you can't help but remember the number one cat, the most tip top... Top Cat!)

9. Touche Turtle (Now this is probably an obscure Hanna-Barbera cartoon I'm sure most of you are scratching your head at, but Touche Turtle was part of the show 'The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon series', that had three segments for a few cartoon characters, the star of them being Wally Gator.  Wally Gator took the first slot, Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har (a hyena) took the second slot, and Touche Turtle and his sidekick Dum Dum (a sheepdog) took the third slot in the half hour program.  In these cartoons Touche was in, he and Dum Dum would always try to help save the day in their own way by somebody who had someone causing troubles.  I always liked that Touche kept a phone inside his shell, that was always hilarious.  Still, even though he wears a musketeer hat, the setting changed wherever Touche and Dum Dum were, they could be in modern times (modern for the 60s, that is), or the Old West, but regardless, Touche always managed to win out in the end in some clever thinking.  There hasn't been much on Touche Turtle since, but here's hoping he gets a chance in the limelight someday...)

8. 2 Stupid Dogs (Big Dog and Little Dog) (The early 90s began, and so did the Ren and Stimpy knock-offs.  2 Stupid Dogs, I suppose you could say qualified as such, but I didn't see them as a knock-off, but rather, it's own thing.  In case some of you don't know what this show was about, there were these two dogs, a little brown dachshund voiced by Mark Schiff and a big grey sheepdog voiced by Brad Garrett.  As the show says, these two dogs are actually... well, stupid.  They'll usually go on these little adventures because of something that interests them, only for them to run into a problem in getting to their destination, and hijinks ensued.  I remember watching the heck out of this show as a kid, and let me tell you, it always brought a laugh out of me.  There were also these segments in the middle that had Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole in a anthro version of their world ala Zootopia, but my main focus were on these two dogs.  Everything they did, from the Little Dog's plans to the Big Dog's simple one-liners, they were always great.  I remember one episode where the dogs had to find a quarter to pay for a payphone, and somehow, the antics end up with the Big Dog in jail, and the Little Dog using the quarter to call his friend, who's still in jail, that was always a laugh riot to me.  Another one I always found funny is how the dogs both wish they could be like them for a day, then they somehow switch bodies ala Freaky Friday, only for them to not notice a thing until near the end of the episode, which was always a knee-slapper.  Well, like them or not, 2 Stupid Dogs was always a show that I'll always admire.)

7. Muttley (Wacky Races/Dastardly and Muttly in their Flying Machines) (What can I say about Muttley that hasn't already been said?  He's a dog with an attitude, but a sneaky one at that.  Whether it's being with Dick Dastardly for races and helping him with his schemes, or being a greedy mutt in getting medals, Muttley was always one that put a smile on my face.  He and Dick Dastardly were villains that I love, because their antics were funny and always blew up in their faces.  Sort of like Wile E. Coyote.  You know their plan is going to fail, but you watch it anyway because you want to see HOW it fails.  Well, Dick Dastardly and Muttley were only in those two shows because as the 70s rolled around, they had to be replaced by the Dread Baron and Mumbly for the Laff A Lympics.  They did get their own status as laughable villains back in Yogi's Treasure Hunt later on, but still, Dick Dastardly and Muttley were always going to be the villains that no doubt were going to be entertaining.  Heck, even the 2017 Wacky Races proved that Muttley and Dick Dastardly could still work... in a way.  No matter what, I'll always like that snickering hound.)

6. Daphne Blake (Scooby-Doo series) (Let me get this clear.  I like all the Scooby Doo characters, no matter what.  I just happened to choose Daphne because, well, she has done good for the team than a lot knows.  Sure, early 70s, she helped in solving mysteries, but I didn't see a lot of damsel Daphne that much... or if I did, I missed it, because by the 80s, she was the most competent person in the gang, mostly because Fred and Velma were gone for a while, and Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy were the main stars for a while.  By the 90s though, everything reverted back when 'A Pup Named Scooby-Doo' reunited the gang.  And, as much as all of us didn't like the live action 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, she has been shown to be quite the fighter.  Heck, most of the Direct-to-Video movies like Zombie Island and Witches Ghost shown her to be a reporter, and What's New Scooby-Doo has shown an independent side of her.  Sure, she had her ups and downs, but Daphne Blake has a lot to show for her character.  Yeah, Velma may be the smart one, and Fred is the leader, and Shaggy and Scooby are always amazing together, but Daphne was the girl that shown she's not just a pretty face.  I'm sure a lot of you understand that.)

5. Tom and Jerry (Tom and Jerry shorts) (I know what you're going to say, 'Why them?'.  Well, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera made these two before any of these other characters, so technically, they're the first Hanna-Barbera creations, so I have every right to talk about them!  But what can I say about Tom and Jerry?  They're Tom and Jerry, they're a classic duo!  This cat and mouse duo are pretty much well known to everyone due to the excessive cartoon violence and how creative they can be with their stunts in their own way.  So, they're not just a typical cat and mouse cartoon, they can still find ways to make these characters work!  But... maybe don't put them in with Willy Wonka.  That might kill off your Direct to DVD chances.)

4. Zorak (Space Ghost) (You guys are probably wondering why I put a Space Ghost villain in this.  Well... okay, I actually liked his character on 'Space Ghost: Coast to Coast', but how could you not?  He's always snarky, he's funny, and most of the time, he can be pretty sneaky.  The original Space Ghost had Zorak as a villain, but I think his best potential was on the fake talk show that Space Ghost hosted, with Moltar and Zorak being the lowly assistants.  I have seen a few clips of the Brak Show with Zorak in them, and I have to admit, he's funny in that as well, for the most part.  It's a shame the voice actor that voiced Zorak in that era passed away, as he gave Zorak a well defined voice.  Still, for the time Zorak was on, he was always the best in what he does.)

3. Yogi Bear (Yogi Bear) (Well, hey hey hey, the smarter than the average bear himself makes the list!  What can I say about Yogi, he was pretty much a cultural icon during the days of Hanna-Barbera.  Yeah, nowadays, he's pretty much obscure, with the only time he ever got brought up was when the 2010 Yogi Bear movie was released, but still, you can't help but remember all the times Yogi was pretty great, starting his humble career on the Huckleberry Hound show, before spinning off to his own series, then becoming a team leader on the Laff-A-Lympics, then getting a few movies on the Hanna-Barbera Superstar 10, to getting a couple crossover shows with other famous Hanna-Barbera characters, and... those weird Yogi Bear shorts made by the Ren and Stimpy creator... regardless of that, Yogi was always a well-known bear, and he succeeds in stealing not just a pic-a-nic basket, but my excitement.)

2. Quick Draw McGraw (Quick Draw McGraw) (This horse is the high-falutin'est, fastest shootin'est cowboy you ever saw, because he's Quick Draw McGraw!  Now, Quick Draw was one of the characters that got me interested in cowboys and Western fiction in general, alongside Hank the Cowdog.  He was always a bumbling hero, but a good natured one in spirit as this sheriff was always determined to take the bad guys in by any means necessary, even if he has to dress up as the mysterious superhero, El Kabong!  I always loved when he went El Kabong, swinging around his guitar and hitting people with it.  My favorite sound effect was always the Kabong sound, because it's just so addicting!  Still, he's always been good natured and good hearted, but be sure to not stand where you are when... KABONG!  www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF9fZC… )

And last, but not least...

1. Penelope Pitstop (Wacky Races/Perils of Penelope Pitstop) (I guess you guys all saw this coming, but how could I not like this character?  Okay, I know what you guys are thinking.  Yes, she's a pretty face, yes, she's a damsel in distress, and yes, she's a bit on the dumb side when it comes to the Hooded Claw capturing her, but aside from that, she's shown to be pretty athletic and sweet around the Ant Hill Mob, who actually considers her her friends.  She's also a pretty competent racer in her own rights, even finding time for mundane things while driving, that's pretty impressive in and of itself.  And most of the time, Penelope finds a good way to save herself.  I like to think she's pretty much in the same school as Daphne Blake when it comes to showing off more than a pretty face.  Here's a bit of a fun fact I bet you guys probably didn't know, but for those who do, just let me say it anyway.  When I started writing fanfiction back then, I always depicted Penelope Pitstop as an orphan girl, something I'm sure the real show never delved into, but I thought it would be pretty amusing.  Imagine my surprise when the 2017 Wacky Races came on, and I saw Pandora's debut episode for the first time that Penelope reveals that she wasn't an orphan.  Since that time, ideas rushed through my mind, going back through my old fanfictions that were pretty much rendered obsolete.  But yeah, both Penelope and Pandora are fantastic, Pandora's pretty much the Wario to Penelope's Mario, the Shadow the Hedgehog to Penelope's Sonic.  My point is, it's an interesting take on the idea.  Even earlier this year, I wrote a story with their 'sisterly' relationship, and I'm hoping to write more on Penelope and Pandora's relationship in the future.  That aside though, Penelope has her moments, sweet and kind, no matter what.  She'll always be number one to me.)

And that's my top 10 Hanna Barbera characters!  I hope you guys enjoyed this little countdown!  See you then!

Yeah, Top Cat is cool, slick and sly!  Sometimes, he can be pretty clever with his tricks as well.

Thanks very much for sharing these pictures AND your reasoning for these choices. And, I have to admit, I DO agree with MOST of them.

Aside from replacing The Two Stupid Dogs with Blue Falcon and Dynomutt and Touche` Turtle with Atom Ant, my list would probably be quite similar.
