Description This is an entry for 's Seduced Contest. I believe it requires a slight explanation.

First off, this is intended to portray the mythic German Lorelei, a gorgeous woman who, much like the Greek Sirens, lures sailors to their deaths through her beauty and voice. As to why this fits the contest:

~I'm a huge fan (seduced by, hehe) legends of all sorts, so it seemed appropriate to draw a legend for this, and even more appropriate to draw one involving seduction.

~In this picture, the Lorelei is also seduced by the sea (like so many, including myself) - as she lures sailors forward to the wicked rocks of the shore, so she is lured to forsake the shore and join the sea, as is partly shown in the tendrils of water curling up to drag her from her cliff.

~The men of the ship, in addition to being seduced by beauty, are, in effect, seduced by Death as well, a conscious fascination of many today.

~The Lorelei possesses a beautiful voice, adding to her charms the seduction of music (of which I am a tremendous addict).

~And of course, I hope I've made the drawing fun anough to stare at that it might seduce a few viewers in and of itself.

Phew. I hope that's enough in the way of reasons?

i was told that she sat on the jagged cliffs and rocks and sang so sad and beautifully men crashed their ships into the rocks our jumped to their death at sea to be with her, causeing her to sing even sadder and thus orer men wanting to be with her (and ending up dead in the process)

I should probably be reading your writing, but I can resist art-nouveau-esque sea women leading sailors to their doom.

It's all good to me. I'm trying to do more art nouveau things at the current moment, but it's going very slooooowly.

I love your drawing style, you make everything look... liquid. The lines flow together, it makes the picture come alive.

Thank you. ^^ I've heard the "liquid" idea from others, and I'll admit, as a descriptor I rather like it.

Sorry for how late this reply is, my messages have been piling and I've been insanely lazy/busy/whatever...

Thank you very much! I suppose 'tis better to be seduced by legends than many other things.

(And I'm very interested in those dark fairy tale/nursery rhymes you've started. Entirely my sort of thing. )

Yay, a fellow Classics geek! Hmmm... I guess you could just say you have excellent taste and such is the reason why all fits perfect?

BladedSpear [2008-05-30 16:51:49 +0000 UTC]

Oi, you remember the first Twirrel story I did? The one about the naiad. I might publish that along with all the Twirrels. Can I have this drawing for the print? Will give credit, though you might need to wait a year or so to see your name on a page.

Gimme dibs and the occasional hand-out and I'll send you a copy at the end of it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

orphicfiddler In reply to BladedSpear [2008-05-30 17:43:34 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... Just a copy? If you have serious intentions of publishing things, I wouldn't mind taking a larger role in illustration - make it something more of a joint project. I'd also be willing to contribute poems (say, of people who have sighted the Twirrel over the ages) should you not object. Or whatever. I likes projects. Just a thought.

Though of course you have dibs on drawings. It's not like I'm really doing anything with them otherwise.

She's beautiful Tess...
There's a bend in that river in Germany where there have been many wrecks due to the sharp turn and the currents...
This is where The Lorelei hangs out on the cliffs and mesmerizes sailors with her song and beauty.....

(I would run aground too if I saw this Honey singing to me!!!)
