Thanks. I agree, something is off with the hand -- to be honest, I drew Iris over and over for this and this was the closest I got to satisfaction. So, I stopped to keep from pulling out all my hair. Incidentally, the hand is somewhat referenced, so I can't quite figure out why/where it is off. For you to compare the pose in reference to Katori Shintou Ryu is a very nice compliment.

Well, all I can say is that the overall impression of the pose is great. But as for the hand I guess it is just hard to get all the elements to correspond to the way you want it.
I've gone to the extent of posing with my own sword just to try to figure out what went wrong for you here.
To me it seems like the hand pose is a result of several factors:
- High shoulders
- High elbows
- Your decision of seing the katana in profile
- Your decision to keep the katana in paralell to the vertical frame.
Well, that is what I can see.
I understand that you want to keep the blade in profile, but it does create that "strange" hand pose. The pose would work great with all swords except curved ones.

Your assessment is absolutely correct. The difficult part with this was in incorporating all the elements that I wanted in the layout and concept, which at times are in direct opposition to proper form and anatomy. As I said, I struggled with this one a lot -- I should learn that when that happens, I need to abandon and consider doing something altogether different. In this case, I became too attached to the concept of the background dragon and the reflected eye in the sword aligning with Iris'.
In terms of actual and traditional form for holding a katana, I have too little experience. I really should do more research before I draw the parts of this story that involves sword play. The high shoulders and elbows are obviously poor form. But the idea was to express tension through body language and set a tone for what Iris is/will be experiencing. The katana in profile and vertical is probably never done, so is also bad form. But as I mentioned earlier, it was to accommodate the eye reflection. Anyways, from reading your comments, all of this you had probably already ascertained.
If you can see a way for me to achieve all those elements without compromising form too much, I would love to hear any ideas that you may have. Thank you so much for your analysis of this picture!

I'm glad I can be of help and give some opinions, but I once again have to state that I really like the setup of the entire page.
Having the dragon in the background and the katana lining up with the eye (the Iris) really underlines the title.
But I agree, getting stuck to a consept can be irritating... but then again, you won't get anywhere unless you try.
But once again, the page looks excellent and her pose works great to show power and it works great as a pose, but when compared to a stance it is obvious that there are some flaws. Never the less... it works well.
If I had been a genious at drawing I would send you some tips.... but I suck at drawing. But by all means, yell if you need some opinions. I got some photos from kendo and kobudo sessions that you might use if you need, so feel free to ask. I won't charge or demand anything other than the copyright to the photos themselves.
Rest assured, I am looking through my collection for a stance like this...

I'm like that too. Most of the time I'm like a hermit and don't want to talk to anyone (but force myself so I don't look like an arrogant a**hole!) But sometimes, I really enjoy it and waste all my time conversing rather than drawing.

I love the dragon in the background! So detailed! WoW! I love the designs were the sword meets her body! Is that an evil eye?

Thank you. I'm glad you like it and can see the details. Yes, you might say the eye is evil....but more like vengeful and with blood-lust.

Thank you!! I knew I could count on you to give me a sound critique!!
The b/w with just the logo being red does seem to work. I tried desaturating it to a gray at first, but it just didn't look right. (I'm so very much trial&error still -- falling into what works.)
I didn't even consider things like barcode and the standard publisher box-thing in the upper left. Did Kubert's teach you keep those elements in mind when designing a cover layout, or is it "duh!!", it's common knowledge!?
I've softened the hands -- it was definitely too manly -- hopefully that's better, without obliterating too much of the features.
My intention for the eye was to have the bg dragon's eye reflection in the blade coincide with Iris'. I got lazy when the mirrored dragon image didn't seem to work given the angle of its eye compared to Iris'. The implied blade transparency was a compromise, but not the effect I wanted. Thanks for giving the kick in the ass to do it the way I should've done it in the first place. I think the effect I wanted comes across better in the edit.

Thanks. I'm pretty motivated right now. I want to make this my second career. And I'm glad the edit worked -- thanks again for the advice. The turnaround was fast because I wasn't satisfied with the first post to begin with and kinda knew what I had to do.
Actually, I'm surprised to hear that they imparted to you such practical knowledge. Most schools spew useless theoretical crap, but I guess since Kubert's is a very genre-specific school, practical is important. When I studied engineering, all they taught us was academic theoretical gobble-dee-guk -- important stuff, but very impractical in the work place. Everything I know and use is self-taught while on the job. I guess that's a poor comparison. But I hear a lot of art schools do the same -- pile on a bunch of art history and stuffy stuff.

It must have been fun if you want to go again! Is there a lot of competition for enrollment? How much was tuition, if you don't mind me asking?
Not in a million years do I want to go back to my school. I lovingly called that campus the center of hell for many years afterward. I still have dreams about having to write final exams after not having gone to class all year...I wake up in a cold sweat and say to myself "how did I get my degree??"

Tuition now is about $16,000 a year...it goes up every year. I don't know about the competition....after 3 years, about 16 graduated (started off with around 40-50). It's a small school.

Oshouki In reply to NGoff [2007-11-29 20:54:10 +0000 UTC]
Wow that is a small school. But it's pretty famous! That ranks you pretty much among the elite. My first reaction to the tuition fee was "yikes!", but I come from the era of heavily government subsidized education, so I was spoiled. Considering what post-secondary education costs these days, that is actually very reasonable.

NGoff In reply to Oshouki [2007-12-03 14:26:46 +0000 UTC]
Well..it doens't rank me with the elite..that's for sure. You don't have to have superb talent to get in...just show you have the ambition and motivation to learn and grow in art. ONce you're in, then you have to just follow the instructions and show effort. At least that's how I assess the enrollment and graduating results.
I think one of the reasons it has such a high rep in the field is because of the demands it puts on the students....being able to work on ten different classes a week, usually with an assignment (or progress stage) due each week for each class. It gets the students ready for the work load and hitting deadlines in the 'real' world of the comic field. Decipline and professionalism....under stress.
The skill growth in the actual art is something that really depends on the student. Grading is based off of the following of directions (like you would for an editor) and showing effort.

It definitely ranks you with the elite!! And your artwork is the proof! Don't be so modest! Like you, I believe talent is useless if effort is not put forth. Having seen your current work as well as your earlier stuff, you obviously work hard at your craft! To me, that ranks you as elite! On top of that, your willingness to share your knowledge and advice is really commendable!!

Thanks!! I really appreciate you spending the time to comment! It's really nice to know that others think of my work.
I cheated somewhat and used an edge-detect special effect to get the scale details (you'll see what I mean by that if I ever submit a full colour version.) I did however drew and inked the dragon by hand -- twice. I'm glad you like it, but its far from perfect (being the perfectionist that I am.) The inverse effect of the dragon hides many of its short-comings.
Her eye showing through the sword was actually my laziness. I didn't intend for the blade to be "translucent". I wanted the dragon reflection's eye to line up with Iris', but failed to achieve it on my first go -- I've edited it now and its more what I had initially intended. Despite all that, I'm glad you liked it. But give the new version a look and let me know if its still good.

Hope so. But not too many, cause responding to messages (although fun) is really time consuming. I kinda feel sorry for the really popular dA artists that get swamped with hundreds of messages a day. It would be good if would translate into comic book sales. *day dreams*

Thanks!! I tried desaturating the title to gray but it didn't look as striking. You really think its fine the way it is? For one of the many incarnations of this, I was going to paint in Iris in pale muted colour (kinda like old hand coloured b/w photos.)
