The sun was on his left, the moon was on his right, and on both sides: the ocean.

There are few things that Vitro wishes weren't so taboo: A guy owning a girly-looking cat, crossbreeds being competition worthy, and lastly, casual armor.

I mean come on, can't a guy wear armor without people getting all worried? Can't a guy just wear some body armor all the time because he has to deal with the world's most emotionally unpredictable Shedu? No? People will want to put that Shedu down? Ok.

So that being said he would take any excuse to wear armor around Virago. He would ALSO take any excuse to let his best and only shedu show off what she can really do. She may have been fifty percent asian blood.... or at least so according to the genetics test, but she wasn't just fast and well trained for a crossbreed, she was DAMN fast- enough to compete with some thoroughbreds, and smart enough to understand everything he or anyone else said or told her. Even if she were actually a mean and aggressive cat, to put her down would be a waste.

And as a big sweet cherry on top of his rare competitive treat, he was so happy to learn that red was Rosefield Ranch's chosen "color".

Or at least he could get away with red armor. And tack. As Rosefield Ranch was more of a Ranch than an official Cattery, and as it was the first time they even had a cat that could be considered an "asian" at all, it was kind of news to them that they would need a "cattery color" to identify by. But the moment Vitro looked at the roster of events he was excited as a little boy on his birthday and just HAD to participate- and Rose (the Ranch owner), knew it.

And as he stood back to admire his beloved crossbreed in all of her beauty and grace and glory he couldn't help but feel overwhelmingly excited, and proud. The queen before him burned hot as iron under the black and red blanket, and the bloody tassels stood beneath her muzzle and beside her long cheek hair, framing the intense war face that was her namesake. She met his gaze with a stone-like expression, well in control of herself today. Each sensed the internal fire blazing nearly out of control in the other, and to say that they were both "fired up" would have suited the situation perfectly.

The intercom in the stall sprang to life and barely had time to kindly say in a woman's voice some Japanese greeting. Vitro was already almost skipping out of the stall with Virago following closely behind, the queen doing her own powerful strut behind him to keep up.

It was late in the afternoon- and if it were at all possible, the golden hour somehow managed to make Virago's already burning coat come to it's full, all-out blazing glory. As they were lined up in the starting gate, Virago stood a head and shoulders above the squatter, pure asian cats next to them. Vitro, too, stood a head and shoulders above almost everyone here. The idea that he would need a bigger cat to compete with was just fitting. And frankly, it was a good thing to stand out today. Today they would show them all.

He walked to the side of his horsecat and pulled her long, silky mane into his arm before swinging himself up into the saddle, keeping the reigns loose in the same hand. Knowing how she raced against the Thalyins back home, he wouldn't really need them.

He looked at the track ahead- it was a long one- even without the tree line he couldn't see the other side of the track- which seemed to be something of a beach? He heard a roar. The cat next to them seemed agitated and had begun trying to throw a small fit, but keeping himself calm Vitro exhaled slowly and placed a warm hand onto Virago's shoulder opposite the other cat- Virago turned her head slightly towards his hand, away from the commotion, remaining calm. A perfect response.

He didn't need her to be ready to leap, or to pounce first thing, or to try and sprint the first half and tire herself out. She was fast. They had time to catch up.

The last cat was loaded into the bamboo gates.

He raised the reigns and hair in one hand, and with the other summoned Talon as a staff, which it appeared obediently. Virago let out a guttural roar and at the pop of the firecracker the racers sped off down the path.
