Description Starlit Sky Series Part 1 of 8.

This is the first of eight different parts of the series "Starlit Sky".
Some people may want to say "Aw, this is just a boring piece of space without planets!" but this is just the beginning.

Part 1: this one

----------------- STARLIT SKY SERIES -----------------

I was recently working on a background starfield which I could use on the way of creating new pictures. I had so much fun doing it that it developed to more than just a piece of background. I was working on it from time to time adding more and more details. When I was finished I found that it was actually quite good considering the colors and level of detail. But the composition as a whole was terrible. I didn't want to add one or more planets because I thought this would draw away the attention too much. So I decided to split the whole thing into multiple small pictures. I ended up having eight smaller parts where I thought the composition was good enough and all together they covered most of the original starfield.
I will submit all the eight parts to deviantArt from time to time.
When all eight pieces are submitted I would really like to know which one was your favorite.

I have no issues with this, in fact, the minimalism is kind of introspective. I'll let you know which ones I favoured once they're all submitted.

I like it, but I don't love it... I just feel like something with the nebulae is kind of off, but I can't put my finger on what it might be...

Nice colors.

I rather like how the absence of planets forces one to focus their attention on other things.

My only nitpick is it's overall quite dark, and people may not stick around to look at the details. Some slightly brighter bits of color here and there to keep the eye's interest could help make up for the lack of planets without feeling like it's making up for *anything.*

Also the set of your largest stars could stand to vary a bit more. They all look like they're about the same size, and the same color. You might want to vary the range from blue-white to blue to slightly purplish, as well as their sizes to create more visual interest.

You're totally right. This is actually the darkest of all the eight parts. And I was already thinking about the larger stars. I think I might change them slightly.

You could just overlay the bigger ones you need to put in over them. I've found sometimes having one or two *really* bright stars in key places can draw visual interest around a piece, and can help frame up a composition.

Since you've no planets, you're forced to basically compose with what most space artists seem to use as accents or emphasizers for stunning alien worlds--nebulae, and stars. This experiment is a really good idea to show that a spacescape doesn't need planets as much as some people may think.

So I'd suggest really pushing the variety of your stars, and making the clouds of the nebula more interesting. (I've found the occasional reddish or orange small star in a general crowd of blue/white ones can do the trick...or vice versa. You could start with that idea and work on from there.) Get it to where you KNOW that putting a planet in will absolutely block more of the beauty than it should. Right now, some people might be wanting to say "it needs a planet" and could just be acting too nice to just come out and say it.

Best of luck with the project, and I hope to see more of this series.

What you say is a bit funny but very true. Especially about planets. In the starfield I was working on (mentioned in the description) I had exactly that feeling where I thought adding a planet would destroy the atmosphere/composition of the stars and nebulae around. When I realized that, I thought it would be a nice challenge to create Space Art without any planets. (I don't say this is the best way to do it.) And if you want to hear my opinion, this is the simplest part of the series so you can be pretty sure the upcoming parts of the series will more likely meet your expectations. Or at least I hope so.

And I have to update this anyways because I made some terrible mistakes here :/.

Ok.

It's okay, sometimes hindsight is best after a piece is finished and you haven't looked at it in a little while. A lot of my older pieces make me just cringe to look at now.

Haha, don't think so, you practically have to be an anime artist/photographist on dA to sell that many prints anyway. Otherwise the comment is a little different from reality, since people do not 'fav' your works in such a linear fashion.
