Description For a long time I've wanted to do an image paying homage to the Myst series, since it had been a big inspiration over the years. As the title suggests it is the desk of an Age writer, who has just completed a linking book.

It came out okay I guess.

Here are a few tips to think about when making a picture of a D'ni book in the future.

A linking book could not be written in that place unless it was a linking book to that place.

A descriptive book is the master that allows you to establish a connection to an Age. Once it has been written and the link established, you can journey to that Age and write linking books. The trick is that a linking book must be written and activated in the spot where you want the link to be. It won't work, otherwise.

If a linking book is destroyed, you have to use another, but you can write many linking books to the same place. If a descriptive book is destroyed, or the description of the Age inside it is significantly altered, then it stops working, and so do all of the linking books that were made for that Age. There can only ever be one descriptive book, but you can write as many linking books as you have the patience for.

The linking panel appears on what would be the first page in a descriptive book, and usually the same for any linking books. There are examples of linking books with many panel pages.

On the artistic side, that's a *very* well done scene.

The lighting and shading came out beautifully. You did a great job of capturing that feel of being at the desk and having the linking book open and ready for exploration.Β

Outstanding!! Fits the Myst III - IV aesthetic perfectly. Belays a nice, homey feel. A quiet, comfortable place where the magic happens! Wonderful how the light plays across the desk. Minute detail. Nice to see some familiar objects from the games.

This is very very reminiscent of the look of Myst IV. I could very easily imagine finding this desk somewhere in Tomahna, behind a locked door maybe that we couldn't get through.

Btw have you seen Cyan's Kickstarter for their new game Obduction? If not check it out at www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obductionΒ

We need all the Myst fans we can get!

This is what I wish my desk looked like...
My favorite part of this is the window, and the light effects you used. The window is beautiful in and of its design, but the light coming through, like a bright summer day (similar to the outside my window right now) lends itself to thoughtfulness.
I shall have a print of this. I'm glad you shared it.

Thanks, it's a sort of fanart of the Myst series... I love putting the rays of light in everything and probably overuse them, I get it from anime.

Beautiful! I like the composition, the colors, the definitions of tones and highlights...great contrast, and attention to detail.

MYST is a very epic adventure/puzzle series, and holds a special place in my heart. You did it justice!

P.S. Is that a RIVEN (Age 5) linking book I see on the top of that book pile? Heh heh...

Thanks, I cite it as one of my main inspirations from the early 90s to get into 3D. Riven remains my best game of all-time, currently replaying Uru...

It's an 8 on the book I think but not very clear from the image. But a nod to the naming convention

MrJmZack In reply to owen-c [2011-08-09 04:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Riven was amazing, though I wish to have seen more of the Moiety Age Catherine salvaged. It seemed like it would have made for a very interesting exploration!

Is it really? It looks so much like a 5 when I looked at it last... Been a while since I looked at D'ni numerals though, they both have the horizontal bar across.

Close, but there's a number 8 on it, a bit hard to see on the small size.

My brother always nitpicks on this one about "only Gehn puts numbers on the books..." that sort of guy
