The Cyber Race will be triumphant...Way back in the 60's, before the Borg were even thought of, the BBC's own sci-fi serial "Dr Who" introduced the world to the idea of cybernetic organisms (or cyborgs, if you prefer) in the guise of the Cybermen. For me, they've always been the best of the Doctor's arch-nemeses : their cold, calculating, unfeeling evil has always been, to me, far more sinister than the overzealous megalomania of the Daleks, or even the insane flawed-genius of the Master.
Thank the stars these lads are allergic to gold...

Very well done. All I've seen of the Cybermen is the "Cyberwoman" episode of Torchwood. It's enough to get it, though. You've got good shading, and even though it's cartoon-ish there's a good feeling of form and solidity.
Nice name, btw. I've seen them a few times here in the Washington DC area, and I've got most of the CDs with the exception of the newest one. I'm definitely missing the flutes now that Jumping Jon has moved on. He had this great mizmar solo in one of the shows...

this cyberman is from the 1980s incarnation of dr who, i think from around 1983/4... i've been a fan of the show forever, and the cybermen are my favourite villains — the whole idea of surgically removing all human weakness, including emotion, is the stuff of pure horror, imo, and they've always terrified me as a result...
thanks for the comments on my style — i'm glad that the finer points are being appreciated! the balance between the highly graphic, cartoonish lineart and the textured layering of shading for depth and "realism" are pretty much the cornerstones of my technique...

Eek! Scary! I never was that scared of the Cybermen because I didn't see that many of them,in the episodes, but then I went to a two-day convention and found two of the buggers sneaking up on me-EEK! They got within 5 feet of me before I spotted 'em! Incidentally, one of the people wearing the costumes was femnale, because it was a really hot and sunny day, and I heard her saying "It's bloody hot in here!" to someone.
From that, i learnbed to give the Cybermen 2 things.
1) a wide berth
2) respect!

Kit Pedlar cam up with a genius creation in the Cybermen — it's the fact they chose to become what they are, and weren't created, as the Daleks were, that adds to their creepiness... I mean, what sort of monster chooses to have their emotions removed?

I would wear gold, but gold looks tacky on me, I only wear silver-which, in case of cyberman attack, is absolutely bloody USELESS! I don't suppose a pewter TARDIS key would work either? no, i figured not....
Yes exactly, and I'll tell you another thing......unconfirmed rumours suggest that the Cybermen will follow the lead of the Daleks in having anything weak or laughable removed, which COULD mean that their allergy to gold might be neutralised! (I know they did it in a book!) Yes, in a way the Dalek's utter unhumanness makes them a little less scary, whereas the parody of humanity that is the Cybermen (who CHOSE that way" is actually more scary.

Yes, yes — this is a rumour I've heard... Apparantly, Russell T is keen to "reinvigorate" old enemies, and there'll be appearances of other fiends from the Dr's past during the next two seasons, reworked though not necessarily reinvented for the 21st Century... Can't wait!

I read a good book, it was called ice something or other, and in that one the cybermen really sppoked me when one of them caught somene falling from a height. Someone with the Doctor noted that it was odd that they'd gone to the trouble of saving him, and the Doctor remarked that it was because the Cybermen were very efficient, and had done it because they wanted spare parts/someone to convert and that to let him die would have been wasteful!

Yeeuucchh, indeed — sounds pretty good, that book... I've not read many, but it's amazing how well Dr Who translate to written fiction (I guess because the special effects are limited only to imagination, and not just what's possible with the technology available...)

The Cybermen are set to return next year, in a 2-parter reinventing them Dalek-stylee... To say I'm looking forward to it is like describing Jupiter as "big"...

I must admit, I've been a little underawed by what I've seen of the new series thus far, so thanks for renewing my faith in the inherent coolness of Dr Who.
I've always liked the cybermen myself, and overall they probably are cooler than the Daleks (except in Rememberance of the Daleks, with the Dalek civil war, and the heavy weapons dalek, and...*glee*). Absolutely gorgeous picture!
This is the most tempted I've been in a long, long time to get out the pencils and get to work on something, despite my lack of scanner. Brit Sci-fi is cool!

But yeah, the Heavy Weapons Dalek was immensely cool : pity it wasn't a Rebel Dalek, though, as their grey + black classic design is far cooler than the white + gold... *plug* I've been working on a Dalek drawing, to compliment my Cyberman : stay tuned to this channel!

Bastards! They're still good....but the Cybermen will always be the original "converters" for me. I recomend "Spare Parts" by Big Finish audios. If your a Cyber-fan you'll love that story. It shows their creation. It's definantly not identical to the Genisis of the Daleks story....this is way better! Ever heard of Big Finish's stuff?

yeah I heard that the other day. My boyfriend pointed an article asking if it meant anything to me and who was Chris Eccleson and my first response was WHAT! He's gonna run outa regeneratrions and drop ded soon at this rate! to which he responded "you are such a loser" To which I laughed knowing that we both new who was the real loser around hear aheh anyway
I was also surprised to hear that they renewed the series based on one episode too. I woulda expected people to have all tuned into the first episode I expect weather or not they tune in for the next one was a more important question. Not to say I'm not happy then again I haven't seen the first episode yet so I don't know If I'm happy or not. The publicity I read in it in T.V. Guide made me suspect that it would suck but people so far seem to have liked it so I have hope.

That was my first thought, too! Er, that the Doctor was running out of regenartions... Mind you, and this is a nerdy remark, in the Five Doctors President Borussa (howsoever you spell it) offered the Master a whole new cycle of regenerations, so it's always a possibility that the Doctor will find a way to reset his life-counter...
As for the first epsiode of the new series... Well, I don't want to give anything away, but the structure is more like Buffy and such, so the second story follows on from the first type thing... Er... You'll see what I mean soon enough!
